Morning ppl,

I'm having a bit of a problem with the new Mandrake 2006 Free instalation. Or more noteably the GUI.

The hardware is as follows:

Asus A7A266 MB
AMD Athlon 1.47Ghz Proc
768meg RAM
ATI 128 Rage AGP w/Video out (reported as 1x/2x AGP)
ATI TV/ Video Capture card (reported as a Pinnical)
SB 5.1 Live
D-Link DWL-G510

When I had the MD and Proc set up in my old case I was using a ATI AIW and installed Mandrake 2005 with no problems. Other then setting up the wireless nic w/o internet connection for drivers (long story).

I first put the old hardware together and installed Mandrake 10.0 and it worked fine. The video was clean etc. Since then I migrated to 2005 with the screen being completely hashed up. Ok during the install and config but trashed after reboot. So I downloaded the latest (2006 LE)with the same problems.

I've tried different settings during reinstallations using using the configuration program with some progress.

X starts no problem but when it gets to the desktop the background colour looks like some sort of a weave pattern and there is a curious little black rectangle (about 5mm x 25mm hiegh)hanging off the point of the mouse that will follow it around like it is attached. Although I have managed to shake it loose momentarily but it will return to the mouse pointer shortly after.

I find it curious that version 10.0 works fine but the newer versions don't. I do a complete install each time as opposed to an upgrade.

Currently I have the system booting without starting X for troubleshooting purposes. And there isn't any network/ internet connection at the moment since I have to install MadWiFi first. (I'm using my Windows machine to research this problem)

Any idea on what might be the problem and what tools to use would be apreciated.

Regards,
Anthony

I have a very similar card, it is identified as: 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X. I opened up Hardrake and took a look at the video card settings. BTW, I'm running Mandriva 2006, I also ran 10.1 for about a year. I'm not seeing any of the problems you describe, worked well under 10.1 and 2006.

When I looked under Hardrake the card is identified as : Vendor 4098, Device ID 18242, Sub Vendor 4098, and Sub Device 132. I have Module ATI Mach64 Utah loaded. I think there are several modules you can try.

The only other thing may be the settings you have for your monitor. I'm using a Philips 107T. Monitor settings can cause problems too, so have a look at them also.

Thanks Camorri,

I had a look at the settings in 2006LE and wrote them down. It apears that both versions of Mandriva (10.0 & 2006LE) have identified the video card correctly. The different is in the monitor they detected.

2006LE detected a Generic monitor of 1024x768 while 10.0 detected a Custom monitor and generated specific settings accordingly. I think they should have left the system the way it was in this regard.

The only way I was able to find this out was by re-installing ver. 10.0 and having a look around. I'm glad this was a fresh install as opposed to an upgrade that screwed up.

Hopefully if I do an "upgrade" to 2006LE it will keep the same settings. Mind you I still have to get my Madwifi up and running again before I do that. (madwifi didn't take properly)

Thanks for the help. Cheers,
Anthony
