Linuxant hcf modem driver alternative

I was a little too hasty upgrading 9.2 from 9.1 the other night. I didn't realize that linuxant now charges for their modem drivers.. is there an alternative out there? Can someone shoot me the linuxant driver thats compatible with the 2.4.22 kernel? Is it possible to downgrade to the last kernel that was compatible with the last free version of the linuxant drivers?

Theres no highspeed where I live and I depend on dialup for school work. Now my system is buggers and I'm seriously broke to the max.. unable to pay the mandrake club fee or even the 25 bucks for the linuxant drivers. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

regards

Linuxant still have free drivers but they only operate at 14kbs. It may be better than nothing till you get better.

I've got the Powerpack dvd and I'm sure I saw Conexant drivers somewhere but I can't find them now and am not sure where to look.

maybe you can get hold of the beta version, it works good. Not sure where you could find it.

yes, you could use the linuxant modems capped at 14.4 until you can afford the modest price of $14.95 USD for the full set.

DavidPhillips 11-18-2003 07:57 PM

yes it is quite pricy :)

14.95USD is almost 300 Canadian and 14.4 is too painful, back to 9.1 I go. There were rumors that conexant were developing a linux driver for their modems... what happened to that?

rrsc16954 11-19-2003 01:52 PM

According to my google search 1USD=1.30569 Canadian.

That comes to USD19.52.

There are Conexant drivers on the Powerpac DVD (MANDRAKE/RPMS2) but they are not on the download version.

For mandy 9.2, I used a source rpm from the the last free version of the driver and rebuilt it. Worked fine. Just had to do a hcfpciconfig as root to configure the modem. I'd suggest you get a source rpm or tarball and do that. I'd offer to post it somewhere, but I don't know if you can do that legally. The source rpm that is.

14.95 is 300 Canadian.

Cool I'm headed up there this weekend to by some Harleys.

Actually, it is cheaper to buy a lucent LTmodem. They can be bought sans shipping charges in the states for $10. The driver for these is free (although I sense a trend that linux is not quite as free as it used to be)

Google for LTmodem linux and try searching the internet for a local vendor that carries a cheap ltmodem

I would download the LT modem drivers and make sure I had them safe and cozy on some durable media before buying a modem though. The change at the Conexant Web site caught everybody off guard.

I have the hsf conexant driver as a tarball which will compile with gcc 3.2 and kernel 2.4.22. Send me an email if you want it and trust software you get by email. Per the agreement one can share the older drivers, but not change them or charge for them.

The other thing is that they are archived on the internet for some of the source distros like Gentoo.
