you could actually try the advice it gives you and press alt+f3 to see the logs. And i think you may not be waiting long enough at that point, or you may have some obscure hardware that mandrake is having a hard time detecting.

Press <F1> during the first menu and look at the noapic info.
You can also try unplugging any USB devices before installing.

The installation disk is not able to drop back into graphics mode, because your video card is not framebuffer/vesa capable.

E.g. you have a braindead video adapter.

You'll need to run the install in text mode only.

This is an option which you can specify by switching out of the graphical boot screen.

A text mode install does tend to be a bit more difficult to do though.

Hi, I had a similar problem when trying to install with 10.1 official. I have installed 10.1 on several computers and it only happened the one time.

What i did was to make a boot floppy with an alternate kernel. I booted with the floppy and then put the first install cd in and everything went as usual from then on.

Everything you need to do this is on your install cds. If you bootup xp and then when it has finished booting up, you put your 1st mandrake install disk in the cd drive, you will be able to browse through its files and directories.

I am going to quote two sections from the readme files on the first install disk.

Quote 1.
Alternate installation methods
------------------------------

As non-regression principle doesn't exist in the Linux world :-), you
will maybe have trouble with some particular hardware, with the default
kernel.

You can use an alternate kernel to try and fix that : use the
relevant boot floppy in the `alternatives' subdirectory instead
of default boot floppy. For example using file
`cdrom.img-2.4.24-1mdkBOOT' will end up with a cdrom-based
installation, running with the kernel version 2.4.24-1mdkBOOT.

NB: default images have the freshest kernel version.

Quote 2
Make a boot floppy with Windows

* insert the CDROM, then open the icon
"My Computer", right click on the CDROM drive
icon and select "Open"
* go into the "dosutils" directory and
double-click on the "rawwritewin" icon
* insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive
* select "D:\images\cdrom.img" in the "Image
File" field (assuming that your CDROM drive is
"D:", otherwise replace "D:" as needed)
* select "A:" in the "Floppy Drive" field then
click on "Write".

To begin the installation:

* insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy, then
* restart the computer.

As i said before i was having virtually the same problem as you are having. That is the install would just stop in approximately the same spot as yours.

Doing what i suggested above enabled me to install mandrake without anymore problems on that computer.

Hope this helps

Cheers
