Linux is NOT FREE

Hey, For a long time I was hearing that"Linux is FREE, Linux is FREE, Linux is FREE". But, when I tried to download Linux Mandrake, I was surprised that it costs me $300!!!!!!!

Would any body EXPLAIN for me that?

Try Fedora, or Slackware, Or Debian, AFAIK they are all free.

hi,
i don't know which type of mandrake 10 you were trying to buy, but from the mandrake store, a discovery pack costs only $50.
mandrake linux is free; it's just that version 10 has yet to be released to the general public. you can still download 9.2 from their website for free.
if you want 10 for free, you can still search for it on bittorrent sites.
i think mandrake is good for beginners. slackware is definitely not for beginners.
good luck.

mhmo 05-18-2004 02:21 PM

Thanks for your respond, but , Where can I get them from?
Would you give me the links for downloading them

rgiggs 05-18-2004 02:33 PM

hi,
you can download 9.2 iso images from here:
ftp://mandrake.mirrors.pair.com/Mand.../iso/9.2/i586/
if you want 10 official iso images, you can either pay and buy their cd's, or you can download it at bittorrent sites. however, i can't show you specific links. you can google for 'bittorrent mandrake 10 official' or something like that, or you can wait until they release iso's to the general public, which should be soon because they said they'd do that early may.
good luck.

Mandrake is a distribution that contains more than just the linux kernel. The linux kernel can be obtained for nothing from http://www.kernel.org

If you are looking for a free distro take a look at Fedora or Slackware.

Linux 10 Official is available for free download. That's how i got it. And it is very pretty indeed.

Mandrake 10.0 FTP servers

Here's a list of the (current) Mandrake download sites. The 'Community' version should be on the same servers somewhere under the /Mandrakelinux/.... tree.
Hope that's of use to you. I downloaded the Community ISO's and installed, then updated making rpmdrake use the Official RPMS.

Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official for i586 and higher
Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official packs are available for order at Mandrakestore.com.

Also, Linux is Free, but I can sell it if I want to, both the kernel and other Free Software/Open Source software that comes with it, e.g. in the Mandrake Linux distro.
