Linux Format #53 Mandrake Community 10 3CD set - Cannot install !

Hi Guys !

Im trying to install the Mandrake Community 10 3CD set
from the front cover of Linux Format #53

I've tried a variety of install options on a number of PCs
which work with RH8.0 and RH9

Nothing works

I posted at www.linuxformat.com.au and there are responses
that indicate that some people have had success. But I
am left wondering if they burned CDs from the DVD issue.

I'm using the supplied 3CD set.

Has anyone got this distro from Linux Format #53 to install ?

(Yes I have CDs 1, 2, &3. I can see the directories and files
on the disk using RH9.0 ok)

C.

Here are the details :

Machine config:

Dell Optiplex GX1 450Mhz PIII
1.9 G HDD
128 M RAM
CDR Diamond Data x36
and CDRW Benq x40 drives

Installation attempt one:
--------------------------

>>>Selected:

Full system install - partition entire disk
Multimedia station
Internet station
KDE

>>>Install system phase errors :

There was an error installing the following packages

libkdecore4-3.2-27mdk.i586
xFree86-4.3-29mdk.i586
libkdepim2-kernel-3.2-25mdk.i586
xFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-29mdk.i586

>>>Install bootloader phase error:

An error occurred mkinitrd failed

>>>System restart phase :

System reports at the GRUB loader prompt.

>> Comments:

The installer bypasses the install updates phase !

Installation attempt two(2):
-----------------------------

>> Selected :

Full system install - partition entire disk
Network client
Gnome

>>>Install system pahse errors

There was an error installing the following packages

rpm-4.2.2-7mdk.i586
libxfree86-4.3-29mdk.i586
mpage-2.5.3-5mdk.i586

>> Install bootloader phase

An error occurred mkinitrd failed

my first attempt at 10.0 gave me a failed install on ldconfig, it then said it couldn't go on without it, it then tried to reinstall it, it then tried again, it then succeeded.....

end of story.... NO

on reboot (after an hour of installing) system commander reported a weird problem with three choices....

it appears door # A was not the right choice....

i'm now reinstalling since system commander can no longer read the partition table....

pppphhhuuukkkkkk

perry, be sure to install the bootloader to the root partition instead of to the MBR, or you'll overwrite system commander again

get the xmms-alsa or xmms-arts plugin and switch the out put to one of these instead of OSS. Looks like they missed that one.

Hi guys

Feedback: Problem was resolved.

There is a bug in the install.
During the hardware dettect pahse. MDK10c correctly detected the
presence of a DC305IE PCI SCSI adapter.
The install programm however failed to create a boot program image !

Removing the adapter, and re-running the install worked !
I replaced the adapter after the install, it was then detected, etc by
the system. YUK !

I stumbled on this solution out of desperation.

Hope that helps !

Regards

Chris
