Linux 64-bit edition download
 

Hi all. I want to try out Mandrake Linux 10.1, and so I downloaded the free iso files for this purpose. (I did not want to join the mandrakeclub at present because I don't know whether I will be ready to make the switch or will end up putting windows xp back on. I did try linux once before, but unfortunately didn't have the time to spend getting used to it, so went back to windows...)

Anyway, basically I am going to install it on a 64-bit AMD system. I realised the download I got is not for the 64-bit processors. My question is therefore, will the normal version that i downloaded work on my 64-bit processor? And can I download Mandrake Linux 64-bit edition without paying to become a silver member of the mandrakeclub?

I want to support mandrake linux development if I start really using the operating system, but as I don't know at this stage if I will stick with it, I don't want to sign up as a club member yet...

The standard version will work just fine or your system. Just remember that 64-bit apps won't work with it, so if you add/update things, make sure you get standard 32-bit versions. ;)

And the 64-bit version of Mandrake is currently pay-only. Sorry. :(

Ok thanks! I guess I'll use the 32-bit one then. Just out of curiosity; I read something about doing a "network install" for 64bit mandrake.. Would this work? Does it download the entire 2GB while doing this, and if so is it possible to pause the network install to complete later?
I have broadband, but doing it all in one go would take 10+ hours...

Well, I haven't done a network install, but my understanding of it is, instead of loading your system from CDs/DVD, it downloads the files it needs (the ones you ask for). I don't think it downloads the entire 2G DVD image. I could be wrong, though.

It only downloads the packages you want installed, in the same way that urpmi (the makdrake software installer) can use ftp-based repositories instead of local cd/dvd-based ones. You won't get the iso images downloaded this way, just what you need.

If you later decide you want another package installed, you can do it the same way, without changing anything, and the installer will retrieve it from the same ftp server used to install your system.

if you want the three cd edition for mandrake linux that is 64 bit you can download the RC 1 of mandrake linux 10.1 which is in the devel dir of official ftp servers .I am downloading it for my Amd 64 3000 + and currently migrating from windows Can anyone tell me what pages should i refer for getting me started on linux

Thanks guys. Isn't RC1 older than the lastest though, and buggy? Hmm. Well, I'll see if I can give this network install thingy a go. I don't know whether it'll work with the speedtouch modem i have though...
