LCD native screen resolution not working

With Mandriva 08 and KDE 3.5.7 my Dell 17" LCD only works well at a screen resolution of 1024x768, and the optimal/ native is; 1280 X 1024. I do have a NVIDIA driver installed for my Geforce 7300 GL video card, but it is a little older version, (100.14.19) and Mandriva kernel; 2.6.22.19. So how can I update the NVIDIA driver to a newer version which supports the correct LCD resolution, since the kernel and driver versions need to be matched up with each other. ?

finally fixed

I did get the Mandriva 08 KDE desktop to display correctly mostly by re-selected the software repositories for non-free type and then ran as the root user; nvidia-xconfig, restarted the X server, disabled the auto-login, and selected a default desktop theme, (since it showed none). Then when I opened the "NVIDIA X server settings" it showed as configured with the correct settings for my Dell LCD and nvidia 7300 GS video card. It was really weird when not right, as the task bar and open windows were waves of motion with movement or contact on the desktop.
