kppp will not find my modems

mandriva 2006. kppp will not find my modems.
I have a hardware external and an internal BCM winmodem.
The external is on com1 and the BCM is on com4.
Has anyone run into this problem and if so how did you manage to setup your internet and go online?
I have used the external modem on other linux systems and never had a problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, if they are the same speed I don't see the point of having 2 modems, but setting up kppp for the external should be simpler then the winmodem. Try under device:

/dev/ttyS0

Then try to Query the modem. If successfull try to use the terminal in kppp and send ATDT to the modem and see if you get a dial tone. Then ATH to hang up.

You could see whether Mandriva can configure a modem. Mandriva Control Centre >Set up a new network interface >Modem connection. If it cannot, you may have to install a driver.
