kppp dies - exit code 10

Hi

Having a (strange) problem with kppp. When i dialup, it times out and gives an exit code of 10. Read the man pages but it doesnt make sense.

What ive tried : 1. Increased timeout from 30 secs to 60 sec as initially it just died after 30
secs
2. Tried adding the ´debug´ option to the pppd arguments
3. Changed the baudrate between 115200 & 57600

The authentication is on PAP/CHAP.

The wierd thing is, is that when i try to connect to my ISP it dies. But when i re-connect, it connects sucessfully! It seems to die on the first connect. This has happened to me with my previous distributions of Linux, namely RedHat9 and Knoppix 3.4

Would appreciate if someone could help me please,
Thanks,
Josh

I am also having that problem with my 10.0 install. This is the first modem problem I have ever encountered and use MDK 6.5, 8.1 and 8.2 on different computers with different hardware configurations. Only difference I see is that my authentication is CHAP only. james91911

Man pppd:
Quote:
10 The PPP negotiation failed, that is, it didn't reach the point
where at least one network protocol (e.g. IP) was running.
Also kppp --help reveals " -T Enable test-mode".

What modem do you guys each have?

I have a Conexant chipset modem I am running it with their free driver (that connects at a slower speed 14kb I think) that is avaliable from their web site (www.linuxant.com).

I want to make sure I can connect to the internet before I buy the driver (That connects at a faster speed)

Ok, joshy, you say it always dies on the first connection attempt? Might be a hardware/driver problem, something taking too long to authenticate, or some improper communication between pc, device and ISP. Found any traces online of a similar problem with that modem?
Trying different hardware would be a good start, and borrowing a mate's ISP details for another ISP is another.

Fazel, you know the older driver for the 2.4kernel only are free and full speed, just not 2.6 compatable? If you dont plan/need to use 2.6 kernels, or reccon you'll be on broadband soon, try sticking with the free full speed drivers.

james91911, so you're saying the only connecting feature atm is Mdk 10.0? You all using Official? Download or purchased? Self burned or mailed cds?

Hi

Yes it dies on the first attempt. This is not a major trainsmash. but it gets kinda irritating when ya have to dialup twice!!And it costs cash for that extra dialup everytime! Tonight ill try connecting to my mate's ISP with my modem..Will have to scout for another modem..

Thanks proud,
Bye for now

My ISP is with Adept.

Proud
I bought the CD's but the cd's is burned. They download it for you at 'n nominal fee since some of us don't have the bandwidth or the time to download the cd images.
My problem isn't quite the same as joshy's I can't connect AT ALL.
The cd's is Mandrake 10 official (6 of them) I don't know if I can install with the 2.4 kernel. I am never given an option in the install process.

Hello Proud, thanks so much for the response: I am using the External AKY|Rockwell 56K AFC II Data, Fax, Modem on /dev/tty/S0. This is the four CD set of the Mandrake 10.0 Official purchased from a company that downloads and burns the CD's for you. I am not sure naming the company would be ethical, but if it is of interest and within the Forum Rules, I will be happy to name names. A point of interest for all - if I log in as root and go to the HardDrake program, and click on "Monitor Connections" I can dial up and get connected without problems. Connection is at 49,000 KPBS and does not "time out". I have checked all connections using KPPP in my home directory using "Edit" after highlighting my ISP. The settings appear to be correct (same as those reflected in HardDrake). As in Fazal's case, I am not given an option as which kernal to install, but keeping in mind that I now can use an infra-red wheel mouse and have HardDrake detect my Visioneer 7600 USB scanner, my best guess is the 2.6 kernal (don't think the 2.4 kernal supported any Visioneer products, not sure about the infra-red mouse support). Thanks again for the interest and suggestions. james91911

Hi

All connections were from my PC. And for each scenario i rebooted my machine.

Scenario 1 (did twice)
--------------------
What i did : Connected to my mate's ISP.
What happened : Connected successfully first time. One the first attempt, after disconnecting from my mate's ISP, i connected to mine and it connected successfully!

Scenario 2 (did twice)
--------------------
What i did : Connected to my ISP.
What happened : Failed on first attempt. Connected successfully on second attempt. One the first attempt, after disconnecting from my ISP, i connected to my mate's ISP, and it connected successfully.

So im pretty sure that it's not a hardware/software problem. BUT maybe i need to tweak some settings (hardware/software?)for my ISP??
Could the authentication for the 2 ISP's be different?

Hope my explanation was clear..
Thank you for your patience,
Bye for now

Ok, so joshy, every time you try the first connection attempt fails? Did you try a different modem type or just different ISP?

Fazel and joshy, have you tried james91911's suggestion about connecting via the MCC
Quote:
A point of interest for all - if I log in as root and go to the HardDrake program, and click on "Monitor Connections" I can dial up and get connected without problems. Connection is at 49,000 KPBS and does not "time out".
Fazel I think your problem is not related as you're using an internal modem (right?) and you've not managed to connect at all. I suggest you make a new thread to get specific help.

James and joshy, so you've both got Mandrake 10.0 Official, and external modems which may use the RockWell/Conexant chipset? Can you guys get exact version names and numbers of your hardware and find whether they use that chipset?
Also can you state what uname -a returns.

Thanks but I think I'll rather just buy an external modem and begin from there.

Hello Proud: Here is the information on my modem. Made by Dynamode Systems Ltd (www.dynamode.co.il/) Model: 1456VQE-R. Rockwell 56K data, Fax 14400 class 1 PnP, Full duplex V90 standard 56K modem sold under the brand name Hornet by AAA Model Number: 1456VQE-R1. No chipset listed, but the one shown just above it on the web site says it has the Conexant Chipset, so I would guess mine does too. This looks confusing but I could not find "Hornet or AAA" on a web search but the model number took me to the Dynamode site. Not sure what you mean by uname -a, is that a console search string under root or ??. Thanks for the assist and all your time and trouble james91911.

Hi Proud

Yip, the first connection fails..I tried a different ISP, and it connected first time (Didnt try another modem_.I have Mandrake 10 Official (download version) consisting of 4 disks..Im using a U.S. Robotics Modem 56k external.
Serial Number : "1395L15B0OT571-095630-01"
Im not sure what info ya need regarding my modem, and to be honest i dont know how to retrieve vital into bout my modem in Linux. Hardake doesnt help...?

I Followed your tip of above (the quote).I logged in as ROOT, went to "Monitor Connections" in the Control Center..Clicked the "Connect" button, and voila..it connected first time..

Also Note: I logged in with my usual account. Did the same thing -> Monitor Connections -> Connect.. and voila..it connected first time also..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When i logged in as root and followed the above steps, it connected first time. -->> (root access)
When i logged in as a usual user and followed the above steps also, it connected first time. As the Control Center requires root access, when logged in as a usual user, ya have to enter the root password when entering the Control Center (Monitor Connections). -->(root access)

What im noticing (figured) is that if i connect with "root", it connects first time..
So what does this mean? Is my permissions screwd up..BUT it connected first time with my mate's ISP, and i was logged in as a usual user(no root access).

Tried : Created a link for kppp from start menu to my desktop. Went to properties, and selected "Run as different user" --> root. So i ran kppp as root.
What happened : It died when i tried to connect
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"uname -a" returns :

Linux localhost 2.6.3-7mdk #1 Wed Mar 17 15:56:42 CET 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks proud, for ya patience hey!
Hope this isnt a pain for ya,
Would like to figure out the problem out though..

Cheers,
joshy
