Killing Modified File Auto Backups ("~") - Mandriva 2006

Anyone have an idea on how to kill the "~" files generated when saving a modified file in Mandriva2006, particularly after editing with vi? Creating a number of Perl scripts, this behavior is cluttering their resident directory, and is driving me insane cleaning them out!

Autosave is turned off within KEdit, KWrite, etc., so not an issue with these editors. Used to be able to modify the ~/.vimrc to kill this behavior, doesn't seem to be one in Mandriva 2006. All help is appreciated.

If the file you search for (~/.vimrc) doesn't exist, make it with your options...

I was thinking that just as I posted originally. And to think I'm a Unix admin by profession ;-)

The file for Man2006 is hidden under /usr/share/vim/vimrc, comment out / remove the 'set backup' stanza in the file, good to go after that.
