kernel: vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
My Mandriva 10.1 Official box has been locking up a lot lately. Not while I'm doing anything, just when idle with the screensaver running. I've seen errors like this in the syslog:
11:15:02 cpollock kernel: CPU 0: Machine Check Exception: 0000000000000004
May 26 11:15:02 cpollock kernel: Bank 2: f60020000000017a at 0000000000364000
May 26 11:15:02 cpollock kernel: Kernel panic: CPU context corrupt
Which by googling seems to relate to bad memory, but I've also seen this lately but haven't paid any attention to it, this may also realate to the problem:
vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
I've done some googling on this and it seems to relate to the video card. The card is an Nvida GeForce2 MX 400 64mb. Being still a newbie I'm pretty much flustered at this since I see no rhyme or reason for the lockups. Now on Friday I came home from work to find that the system had tried to reboot however this was on the screen:
uncompressing kernel
crc error
system halted
I realize that the kernel loads itself into memory but what I'm not sure of is if this is three different problems, one problem that is causing different errors or what. The drives both check out good. When running memtest last night after about 30% the system went into a reboot again. I've added one 256mb ram stick yesterday and replaced one of the 128mb with another 256 that I bought today. After rebooting the system it ran for about 3hrs before it was again locked up. No entries in the syslog, the only thing that does show up is the "vesafb failed" error.
Any advice/help would be gratefully appreciated.
Chris
