kernel versions


could anyone advise me why there are nokernel versions that has a odd second number.
ie. there are no version 2.5 or 2.7 etc

Originally, the odd numbers were used to identify development versions, while even numbers where used for stable versions.

In 2.6, that model changed and development is now done in the same release number.

Actually, there were kernel versions for 2.5. This was the development cycle of kernels between 2.4 and 2.6.

It has changed now, as deemed by Linus Torvolds. You can read more about it here:
