Kernel upgrade from Linux Format Mag (UK)
 

Hi there.

I picked up LINUX format mag today and on it was a distro of Fedora and a disc containing various other stuff including a kernel update for the discs that were supplied with issue 47's mandrake 9.2 distro. I am running that distro right now and was worried about updating the kernel with this new one when it seems to be running ok for me at the moment.

If i got to the directory on the CD containing the files, I get 2 RPM's one called kernel-2.4.22.21-mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm and kernel-source-2.4.22-21mdk.i586.rpm.

I'm reluctant to do anything with these without advice as I don't want to screw up a few weeks of hard work. The readme file that comes with it is a little vauge to say the least.

What I'm after is...

1) Are these really necessary?
2) How's best to install them at the command line?
3) Have you done them and how did it turn out?

1) Not really but they are security fixes
2) rpm -ivh /path/to/package
3) I don;t use mandrake but now that kernel 2.6.1 is out I would reccomend that you download and install that instead.

If you install a kernel using mandrakes rpm, you will have another entry in your lilo startup to choose from. If it doesn't work out for you, just don't select the new kernel.

Ok. Sounds like a better idea.

Where can it be downloaded from and how easy and what command to install?

Download from:
http://www.kernel.org

The install instructions are in a README file with the download. Don't worry if it doesn't work the first time. It often takes a bit of tweaking.
