Question Kernel upgrade

I wich to upgrade my kernel (I have toone distributed with Mdk 9.0) but I can't manage to get any information on how to do this and where to donwload it. I've looked at kernel.org and downloaded a file named ".....changes...." (can't remember but it look like a patch) and I don't know what to do with it. I need the latest released secure/stable kernel version).

thanks

If your downloading from kernel.org, you'll want to download the 2.4.22 series. Usually they will offer it as a bz2 or tar.gz package. There's not much difference, just a slight way to untar it.

If you need instructions compiling the kernel, I would recommend to read the Kernel howto at www.tldp.org or search the forums here as this is asked and answered all the time.

Ask away if you run into any problems or have more questions.

I'm not sure you want to do this. The mandrake kernel is patched (i.e. a few non standard features) and you will lose them unless you apply the right patches.

You could try see if there is a kernel-rpm available for mandrake9.0. If there is you could install that. It will only install the sources so you will still have to compile it. The mandrake documentation on how to compile a kernel are pretty good, actually. They are available from their download site.
