Kernel Tuning in Mandrake 10.2 LE

All - I'm relatively new to the Mandrake distro and would like to take a turn at tuning the 2.6 kernel. There seems to be a different process for tuning in Mandrake. For one, by default the kernel isn't located under /usr/src. It is located in the /boot directory. I am unable to perform at "make xconfig" and get the following error:

"make *** No rule to make target `xconfig'. *** Stop"

Can anyone tell me how to make changes to the kernel?

I think you haven't installed the kernel-source RPM
urpmi kernel-source
this will put the Linux Kernel source in /usr/src/linux

AFAIK the kernel source has not been put into the /boot directory but you will always find the compiled kernel image in there. Is that what you are getting confused with?

On any distro the compiled kernel is always in the /boot directory and the kernel source is always in /usr/src. You should get the source RPM for the kernel and tweak that to make your changes. That way you can use the same build options, patches etc. that Mandriva used to build it originally and I think you'll find it easier to work with than the way the kernel-source RPM arranges things.
