Kernel panic with Mdk 10.1 and Serial ATA HD
Hi all,
I have a P4 with a single Serial ATA 160 GB HD. Until now I was using
Mandrake 10 with kernel 2.6.3 without any problem. Recently I decided to
update to Mdk 10.1 Community through urpmi. When updating the kernel to
2.6.8.1 and rebooting I get: "error 6 mounting ext3" and "kernel panic:
no init found". I would say that lilo is correctly configured and initrd
images are correct.
Comparing startup messages, one sees that kernel 2.6.3 recognized
appropiately all devices: dvd/dvd+rw in hda/hdb (ide0) and hard disk in
hde (ide2). In contrast, the hard disk is not recognized with the new
kernel. I presume that this is the reason why I get the kernel panic.
Has anybody found the same problem? Any idea?
Many thanks in advance,
Dani Arteaga

Thanks for your reply. My motherboard is an Asus P4P800 Deluxe, with chipset Intel 865PE and Intel SATA onboard (integrated in the MB). Hope this helps.

I have the same problem.
in mandrake 10.0 my SATA-Drive was /dev/hde.
now it is /dev/sda.
Hmmm, at the moment I have no solution.

Actually the last poster put up the solution:
"in mandrake 10.0 my SATA-Drive was /dev/hde.
now it is /dev/sda."
This means that you need to modify the /etc/fstab entry to reflect this.
Note this can make it impossible to boot the system under the prior kernel.
So your best bet is to boot normally then copy fstab to a backup.
e.g.
cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak
Then edit /etc/fstab to reflect the new drive ordering as stated.
Then reboot using the new kernel.
Should the new kernel not work, you will need to boot from the CD in rescue mode or from a LiveCD then mount your partition containing /etc and copy the original file back to how it was so you can boot the old kernel.

@opjose
This was actually the first thing I did
The problem is that in Mdk 10.1 the kernel doen't recognize /dev/sda.
So every time I booted the boot process was interrupted (no real problem since it's my 2. HD with no OS).
The situaution changed since I upgraded to the latest kernel via urpmi (from cooker).
Now the kernel recognizes /dev/sda and it can be mounted.
Of course I don't know what the error was, but for now I'm happy that it works

I may have a similar problem. I have an MSI 6741 MoBo with a partitioned hdd, XP in one partition, Mandrake 10.0 in the other and this worked ok. But now I have added a sata and can no longer boot into Linux. I get "Error 6 mounting ext 2" and "Kernel panic: no init found". I tried rescue mode with the mandrake 10 disk but don't really know what path to follow. Should I just try an upgrade from the same disk?

Basically this is the same problem as the previous poster.
The drive is not being recognized at the same device entry as before.
You need to view the kernel's boot messages to determine how the drive is being recognized.
Often during the data dump that occurs at startup any changes are visible.
