"Kernel panic: No init found.
Hey guys;
I have an AMD 2800XP and my power supply went out and I had
to replace it. I had problems with it making noise before. I
replaced the power supply (2X) and finally switched to an Antec power supply and chucked the Linksworld one, its junk. When I boot into windows xp it's OK (have dual boot), when I
boot into Mandrake 10.0 I get this message "Kernel panic: No init found. Try
passing init=option to kernel."
This message occurs just before the second splash screen opens up. The light
blue graph bar scrolls from left to right, then I get that long text message
stated above.
What could have caused this? Certainley not the power supply, could it?
How can I correct it?

Linux is not finding either itself or the /etc directory on your hard drive or Linux partition.
Boot up from a Live Linux CD such as Mandrake, or boot the installer disk into rescue mode.
Then mount the old drive containing the /etc partition and check that
1) The partition is accessible
2) There is nothing wrong with the contents of /etc/fstab

Yes you are correct, because it does mention it is searching etc 6 before giving me that "init error message".
I took my box back to the PC store where I purchased it from and they removed all the IDE cables. Intially they pulled the motherboard and everything off when they made the repair. It was the 2nd power supply that has failed.
I will check it out in a few hours to make sure everything has been put back correctly and report back soon. Maybe they forgot to connect one the the hardrives, it makes a humming noise when searching for it, a noise I have never heard before, it repeats itself 3X, but never boots into Mandrake.

Ouch that is not a good sign.
Stick your ear to the HDD if you have to and make sure it's spinning up.

Problem resolved, the techs at PC store had the IDE cables reversed with the CD ROM on the motherboard. I could boot into windows, but not Mandrake because Mandrake was on another drive. Cables reversed and now it works just fine.
Thanks for your help, it was what I was suspecting, but I thought, well how could windows boot if it was reversed and not Mandrake.
Thanks for your help....
