kde 3.4 install

Hello
I have just installed kde 3.4. Since the applications disappeared, I ran update-menus as user and root from command line. The following message came up both times.
----------
Running 2 savekdemimetypes.pl/var/lib/menu-xdg/applications
Running 2 restorekdemimetypes.pl/var/lib/menu-xdg/applications
processing /root/tmp/update-menu-0-kdemimetypes
.... still working

** (process:7390): CRITICAL **: file eggdesktopentries.c: line 2223 (egg_desktop_entries_add_group): assertion `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed

-----------------------
What else could I do to get the applications back and reestablish links? I installed through mandrake control center and everything installed OK. Thanks in advance for help.

What did you upgrade from? It may be that 3.4 is different enough to have apps and files in new incompatible areas. It would probably be a better idea to remove KDE entirely and the install it from scratch.

Hello
Thanks for response. I upgraded from kde 3.2. Everything was up to date on that version. I have tried to install previously on 3.3 also and when I rebooted the sytem the login manager had a long list of users such as bin, dev, etc, var and more. It would not login at all. I haven't rebooted to find out if that's going to happen or not. I googled the message and found some messages but no solutions yet. Thanks again.
