KDE 3.4.0 is it supposed to be real unstable?

hi i'm using Mandrake/Mandriva 10.1 with THACS kde3.4.0

Another improvement is the increased stability. Gone are the days of konqueror crashing on a java or flash site. No more are the crashes of kmail as it re-indexes or compresses a large folder. A distant memory are the crashes of knode due to a malformed character or large image in a usenet post. No longer does one experience freezes as one checks their klipper content. Past is the lagging as one tries to move around large files. It may have went through some growing pains over the years, but KDE has become mature, stable, and complete. We have finally reached desktop utopia.

I'm having regular (every 30 - 60 minutes Konqueror Crashes.
Amarok and XMMS hang permanently after playing music for 30minutes (leads me to beleive an Arts problem.)

XMMS also crashes if i try to change the double size veiw setting.

I never had such noteable problems with
kde3.2.1 kde 3.2.3 or kde 3.3.0 :(

any ideas of a resolution?

May be you should go back to 3.2 or 3.3. I too used thac's KDE 3.4 rpms for 10.1(and am using his 3.4 rpms for LE 2005). Konqueror only crashes if i open an archive file through it and try to copy its contents outside. But when i had 10.1(w/3.4), amarok and xmms, closed after playing a few seconds.
And there were a lot of core.xxxx files in my home folder. I dont know if they are problems with thacīs rpms.

P.S.: I still have a lot of core.xxxx files, but there have been no crashes.

These are problems that could have been introduced during packaging (rpm creation) and not bugs in KDE itself. I have used KDE 3.4 on Slack and FreeBSD and it is definitely quite stable and Konqueror has never crashed.

I actually usually steer 100miles clear of thacs rpms since i tryed Firefox1.0 from a thacs server a while back.. and it crashed and kept looking for data in /home/adam/
no such user exists meaning it was a poorly made rpm.

I just wanted to try kde3.4 and knstruct wasnt working for me :(

but i was mainly after feedback as to whether thacs rpms are responsible or not :)

I'm having so many problems..mainly with sound. I've tried everything I can think of..amarok crashes all the time...as does arts. It's such a pain.

I'm using a clean LE2005 plus Thacs rpms and everything is fine except for 2 'niggles'. K3B toolbars menus have gotten screwed up and as yet I haven't worked out how to sort them. The other one is the shutdown and restart options have gone form the log off menu.

Generally I think it's a good release. I've read though that the best way to do the upgrade is to TOTALLY remove 3.3.2 first. Otherwise bits get left behind and cause all these horrid problems.

That was exactly my number 1 problem in KDE 3.4.0 THACS RPM version.
Amarok would 100% lock up after between 1-10 songs
Xmms with ARTS plugin set would last 1 song and completely hang KDE 3.4.0, Keyboard and mouse requiring hard Reboot .

I can't really point blame at anything thaN the thacs RPMs

I dont have those problems anymore

I am currently using amarok and Kaffiene simultaneously with no problems uptime hovering around 3 days.

I emplore you to compile 3.4.0 yourself using KONSTRUCT

I really hate to say anything bad about thac, because he does provide these rpms to the community. But he has admitted he doesn't follow Mandrakes "rules" for making the rpms. Like any *non-official* repository, use at your own risk.

sgrayban 06-10-2005 01:30 AM

Thac's rpm's are poorly made. Its a shame and I wish he would spend just a bit more time into making them. His repository would be a great asset to us.

But not ALL rpm repositories are created that way. I have my own repository and I do follow madrivia's rpm policies. I also contribute rpm's to the club there.

courtrrb 06-10-2005 02:30 PM

I've used Thac's rpm's for kde3.4 on 5 different machines includes a laptop without any of the problems you reported. What I did was to completely and I mean COMPLETELY removed all of the existing kde first. I then loaded Thac's rpm's with no problems.
