i try to installed some new screensaver on my laptop, but why i can't see it in my KDE screensavers list (even no default scrsaver on the list) ? (KDE=>LooknFeel=>Screensaver)
here the step i take to install the screensaver:
- un-tar the file
- ./configure
- make
- make install
- and using command : cp -a /usr/share/applink/System/ScreenSavers/scrsavername.desktop /usr/share/applink-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers/
and i check on that directory the scrsaver i've installed is there, but when i start KDE there no scrsaver on the list.
How can i fix the problem ? Any trick or a step that i forgot to do ?
And other problem i wanna ask is i've tried to install other scrsaver from KDE-look.org but it has error problem when ./configure the scr saver it's says "failed to configure X... install abort !!".
Is that bout installing XFree to the system ? or other thing ?
But when i try to install XFree to the system is has some option bout the 3D card i used but there's only has 4 option and all about vodoo 3DFx which i not have (i used Radeon mobility M6 as my 3D card)
If you do a search with the keyword "screensaver" on this web site, you will find all the help you need. In particular, you will find something about the .hidden directory not been set correctly.
Also, without doing anything mentionned above (i.e. in my reply or in your post), you can just install the KDEartworks rpm from the Mdk 9.2 CDs. For that, you need to start the Install Software program and search with the keywords KDE and/or artworks. After installation, you will have plenty of screensavers in KDE.
thanks bro, i do a little research b4 i post the problem, n still there's no answer about KDE 3.1 + Mandrake9.2 screensavers problems the answer is to install KDE multimedia pack or KDE artwork (like what u call, but i think its the same).
Hmm or this problem bug in mdk 9.2 ? I dunno so thats why i post for
Arghh.. i think i have to installed KDE multimedia pack, its better than just a blank screen though...
but hey i found one maybe its one like u said be4 :
quote :
Got this from the mandrakusers.org a while back
"And if you want your screensavers working (mine did not):
In a terminal su to root, cd to /usr/share, then type:
ln -s ./applnk-mdk/.hidden ./applnk-mdk.hidden
Go to the KDE settings, (configure your desktop), look and feel, screensavers, there they are!
"
try that.'
Hehehe thanks for the clue bro.... hope its work 4 me
Of course zmaint, the fact that there was no screensavers in KDE is a "kind" of bug, i.e. the installation did not worked properly for KDE (in Gnome it is OK). However, I doubt a fix was posted because it would still be IN the update directory. In any cases, I dowloaded and applied all updates and the problem was still there ... until I installed the KDE artworks package.
Noyz you would be mostly correct. It's been several months but I think what you have down was what Mandrake had listed on its bug fix page. I had the download edition as soon as it came out and it was messed up. I bought the Powerpack tho and I didn't run into that problem. I have slept since then so I can't be 100% sure
yep, i have mandrake 9.2 download edition bro but i don't have mandrake PowerPack.
Hmm does anyone know why when i try to use screen saver which enable GL (for my case is tuxsaver(GL)) my machine freeze, or haven't i install the GL driver.... ?
But when i check using MCC it state corectly that my system know that my display is Radeon Mobility M6, so whats the problem is?
Does anyone know how to fix it? And how to check wheter my machine has GL driver install or not ?
FYI my laptop use Mobility Radeon M6 as display adapter.
I know the download edition left out a lot of things I consider necessary... Kernel source.... Nvidia drivers... etc.. It is rather likely you will have to check ATI for their latest Linux drivers. That is something unfortunately ATI is not very good at. I bought PowerPack because I got tired of having to download and compile a ton of stuff that they left off the cds. I realize its not possible to get everything everybody wants on the DL CD's but drivers and kernels would have been nice....
I am still rather new at all of this and am not sure of an official way to test whether OpenGL is installed or not. If you can't run an OpenGL screensaver I would say the chances of your current driver supporting it is slim. I know that before I downloaded and installed my Nvidia driver (before I installed PowerPack) I couldn't use those OpenGL screensavers either, and Tux Racer was painfully slow, as was Chromium. After the new drivers with OpenGL support everything runs great with no trouble.
i've searching other forum and i found how to install the ATI driver for mandrake 9.2 (mandrakeusers.org).
But i have to make a boot disk first. My problem is to create the boot disk i have a utility call fputils, where i can get the fd utils ? (i browse my cd, there no fdutils there)
You shouldn't have to make a boot disk. Just hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a prompt. Log in as root, su works, and kill X. Then install your driver. Then you just restart X or reboot. I believe init 3 kills X and init 5 re-starts it. That's how I got my Nvidia driver to install.
thanks for the tips bro, but i also had other problem(install modem driver), which cause me to do a kernel source compile.
I think its wiser to make a boot disk, back-up important file first before i do kernel source compile.
