java path in bash

This is probably a simple thing. I've installed to 9.2 with most plugins I need but I have problems with j2re-1_4_2_02. It installed fine, works in Mozilla and others but not in a shell. If I try a java program it says "bash: java: command not found"

$ echo $PATH gave /sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin

So I thought it was missing the path to the javaplugin 'libjavaplugin_oji.so'. But after inserting the path in .bashrc nothing changed. So I realized that it must be the bin folder that needs to be linked /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin in the path of .bashrc but same same...

Does anybody know/have an idea of what needs to be pathed where to get java working?
I've looked through my linux book but don't seem to find t he answear I'm looking for (advice on good books are welcome). Thanks!

You need to have the bin in your path. After you have done that, try to type a 'which java' and if you get a response, then the system found your java. If not, make sure you logout/login, (or I'm sure there is a manual way), to make sure that bash reads your config file.

It's working now! It probably didn't read the bashrc so logout did the trick. Thanks!
