Hi everyone:
I am using mandriva 2008.0 on my rather old box(P3,1137 GHz,512 megs of RAM,Intel 810E2 chipset). I am having a couple of issues with playing videos.
#1. When I try to play a video using kmplayer, often the system freezes, the screen resolution changes from 1024*768 to a lower value, most likely 640*480. I have to log out using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. No such problems are there when I try to use mplayer, kaffeine, or any of the other video players.
#2. When I try to play a VCD using either kaffeine, mplayer or any of the others, the player simply crashes. There is nothing wrong with the CD, as it can be played on my friend's laptop running Windows XP. I think I do have the codecs installed, as I regularly update my system using urpmi.
Are you using 3D desktop? I don't use it, but I hear it causes problems for playing videos, if you do, try turning 3D Desktop off.
Make sure you have all the needed codecs and stuff installed, the main ones are the win32 stuff, real player, libdvdcss2. You prolly have these installed already, but just incase you don't, just enable the non-free repositories (http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/) and search win32, Real etc, whatever codecs are needed for the type of media you wish to play.
What happens if you start your media player via a konsole, and then try and play your VCD, does it output any errors in the konsole?
In fact my poor old computer cannot handle 3D desktop effects.
I have added all the sources in urpmi mirrors, and installed all the codecs.
The VCD movie won't run from the disc, but it runs from the Hard Drive...
The problem may lay with your CD Rom drive, you can obtain a basic dvd drive, for not very much, these days.
I hope this is of help.
Jnike
Actually I have two drives, one is a DVD combo, and the other is a DVD writer. I do not have a CDROM attached to my PC.
Other media players seem to be able to play VCDs now.
Someone at my grad school suggested something, and I did that..wish I could recall what it was. Kaffeine still fails, though.
