Is there some news that says Mandriva is here to stay, or are you just saying that since it forked, it is here to stay?

It is looking as if there will be changes to the 2011 Mandriva. One thing to think about. Mageia is supposed to be coming out this month, but if you are a current Mandriva 2010 user, you will notice that the updates have not stopped? Obviously someone is still creating updates. I am really excited about trying out the Mageia distro as now (as a Mandriva user) can be excited about the 2011 release. With everything I have read, I see Mageia being more of a continuation of Mandriva 2010.1 then the 2011 version, only because so many of the contributors (and even many that actually worked for Mandriva) are on the Mageia team.

Who knows, either way it will be exciting to see the outcome of both distros. :)

Maybe being written down earlier, but Mandriva will bring another version of 2010 around Christmas.
We are talking Mandriva 2010.2
This will be the third release in the 2010-cyclus, from 2011 on there will be only one release each year.

Mageia will bring it's first alpha in January 2011.

I've used Mandrake/Mandriva ever since the 5.2 release, was a shareholder from the initial IPO and a contributor to the 7.x and 8.x documentation. While always a great Linux distro, it has always been poorly managed by the suits.

I gather that corporate Mandriva will continue to "support' the distro, primarily to use as a base for its Enterprise products. I'm suspicious as to whether or not those cutting-edge changes proposed for Mandriva 2011 will actually come about because of the time and expense involved (like converting to RPM5 -- all the management and build tools need to be adapted).

Mageia looks to be where the spirit of Mandriva will survive and I hope to help out there with documentation and bug triage. There are ample opportunities for people to become involved at every level. If you're interested, now is the time to do it.

Still, the first release of Mageia will only be a re-brand of the current Mandriva cooker and Mageia seems to be slower adopting cutting edge technologies at the moment while they are still getting up to speed.

The Mageia Community can certainly use the enthusiasm of the Mandriva community that the new corporate overlords will no doubt allow to wither.

I certainly see Mageia being one of the cutting edge distros by 2012 maybe 2013. Someone needs to give the Ubuntu folks a run for their money. :)

the only reason ubuntu is as big as it is, is because they ship the disks for free
it is promoted as a newbie friendly distro when in reality it is no more friendly than any other distro

wind the clock back a few years and the newbie friendly distros were Mandrake 7 and Red Hat 6

I started my life as a Linux user with Mandrake 10.1 myself (right after the Windows NT on my desktop puter got infected with adware, so I bid Billy Boy Gates good riddance). Mandrake lurched horribly when I plugged in my graphics tablet for the first time, so I backed up all my stuff again and installed Ubuntu on it, and Ubuntu’s still there on it. My laptop, which I bought later, went the other way, starting off with an Ubuntu-like distro called Linux Mint, which had this annoying habit of changing my keyboard layout every time I booted up. One day, it crapped the bed, refusing to open Gnome, and I replaced it with Mandriva One 2010 Spring a month ago. Mandriva gave me back the use of my Synaptic touchpad, which Linux Mint never got working.

I'm pretty glad to hear about Mandriva continuing (and about Mageia). I've been using just pure, plain 'ol Debian (and various other distros) for quite some time now. I just recently put Mandriva Free 2010 on my main computer,...and I love it. I'm on dialup (yup.) and I need to have a distro that has most of the apps I need right on the install DVD. Debian did that,...but I had to buy the whole 5 DVD set!!! Mandriva just has one DVD,..but it comes loaded with the apps I use. Cool. Besides,..it has LXDE on the DVD, too,...(as well as other DEs).

A slow forum, to me is a sign of a good distro, people not having many issues using it! Mandriva is one of the top 5 distros that have been around for awhile also, IMHO.

Yes, my Synaptec touchpad was blind under Linux Mint, and Mandriva made it see my fingers moving over it. ^_^
