Is 2007.1 x86_64 xorg 7.2 Compatible with ATI Drivers for Radeon Xpress 200?

Current configuration:

Compaq v2413us with Free x86_64 from 2007.0 DVD.iso using ATI Proprietary Drivers version 8.35.5. 3d desktop is active (and WONDERFUL).

I attempted to install 2007.1 Free x86_64 from DVD.iso. I installed ATI proprietary drivers 8.36.5, which says it is compatible with X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1. However, 2007.1 uses xorg 7.2. When drivers generated I forced 7.1 architecture. During install, when ATI process creates xorg.conf, response was "segmentation fault." Basically no desktop (KDE or GNOME).

I can be a lot more specific, but just wanted to know if I should wait for ATI to catchup before trying again or is there something very specific that needs to be done.

The package you need (ati-8.34.8-2.1plf2007.1.i586.rpm) is in the plf non-free repository.

If you have not done so, you can add this repository to your set of urpmi media sources by following the directions at Easy URPMI. Set up both the plf free and the plf non-free sources. You can also set up main, main updates, config, and config updates from the Open Source (official) list of media sources if you wish to have the full range of software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux available for installation using urpmi or the Mandriva Software Installer.

If Linux starts into a GUI, switch to a console screen (CTRL+ALT+F2-6) and log in as root. Execute:
Code:
telinit 3
to shut down Xorg. If the GUI does not start, simply log in as root at the log in prompt. Execute:
Code:
XFdrake
You should use this tool to configure your graphics card. When asked if you want to use the available proprietary driver, answer yes. The correct packages will be installed automatically.

HTH,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I found the 64 bit equivalent:

ati-8.34.8-2.1plf2007.1.x86_64.rpm

Also, this:

dkms-ati-8.34.8-2.1plf2007.1.x86_64.rpm

I tried both the plf and non-plf (Mandriva non free) versions of the above. I don't know if they are different binaries, but the plf version worked and the non-plf did NOT. One of the things that the plf version had is the aticonfig command which seems to create xorg.conf that pretty much works out of the box after I disable composite extensions just like the native ati drivers.

Once again I am in a quandry about actually buying Mandriva (e.g., through the club). I would like to know that by spending the extra money, I could spend less time sorting this out. I am not yet convinced.
