I have Mandrake 10.0 installed on my home computer and it works perfect. That's on Comcast cable internet directly connected to the modem.
I have a laptop I've installed Mandrake 10.0 and everything works great except the internet. I use the internet here at my shop and there's two other computers that share the internet. It works fine in Windows XP but in Mandrake, only a few webpages work (like this one). When I try to access other sites I get a timeout error and something about port 80. I also cannot connect to GAIM or anything else.
The laptop is connected to a DSL Gateway (which I guess is a modem/hub in one).
Use a Gui like Guarddog to open the ports in your firewall which relate to the Gaim messenger protocols. If you wanna use Guarddog to configure your iptable firewall scripts, turn off Mandrake's default called Shorewall.

Does Mandrake install a firewall by default? I have Mandrake installed on my home computer, which is directly connected to a cable modem, and everything works fine. During the install I remember it saying something about no firewall being installed. *shrug*
Your linux kernel should have iptables built in by default and Mandrake should have installed its Shorewall app to help configure the scripted rules. If not you can still install Guarddog and use that instead, or Firestarter, etc.
Hm, well I can't seem to find Shorewall. I don't understand why it would work on my home computer, but not this computer when both were installed the same way, same versions (same discs), etc.
Any other possible ideas that might cause everything else to work, but no GAim (or any messanger program)?
