Internet access

I am trying out linux and
I've installed Mandrake 9.1 and managed
to connect to the internet (ADSL modem)
using the wizard in Mandrake Control Center
without any problems.

I've decided to try Mandriva Live 2007 and can't connect
to the internet.

Is there a way I can check what my mandrake 9.1
settings were and use the same settings in Mandriva?

Thanks in advance

Remember that any changes made to networking must be done with root permissions or as root. Did you try the MCC in 2007? It is actually better than 9.1 in many ways. Typically, setting the nic to dhcp should be sufficient to get an IP address. If your provider uses a fixed address, then obviously the nic should be programmed with that information.

I finally got it to work, but I still think something is
not right with the software.

It seemed to have something to do with the adsl set up.

I changed my modem to behave as a router therby avoiding the
need to login thru Mandriva.

Configuring only the ethernet card without and intrenet connection
worked.

Yes, hooking to a router is easier than the modem setup. I guess it depends upon which is easier to get your provider to communicate wit- the modem or the computer. I have seen posts elsewhere that suggest programming the modem is better than using the nic; it may be a limitation of the provider. I know that here in the US, cable attempts to control the line by demanding use of their modem. The reason is quite simple: they want to charge for multiple computers. If one can use a router, limiting use is not possible. So their techs hook up to a machine using usb! It is quite a trick to get their system to work on a router once they have setup through usb!
