LinuxQuestions.org - Intel 945 Display Problems - XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X

I have an HP laptop dv6000t dual core 64 bit processor. Loaded Mandriva 2007 (4CD edition) few days back. I got it installed but I am having issues loading the GUI.

I did a bit of searching around this forum and found quite a few similar issues and attempted to fix my issue referencing my search results. After the O/S is loaded I am prompted with a CLI, user login prompt. I su - in successfully.

I unable to startx or startkde. Typical message I get is

XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I attempted to mod my display settings through mcc as well as change the driver to "vesa" in my x11org.conf file, yet still does not work Again, my display adapter is an intel 945 chipset.

Any suggestions or am I screwed?

Just my luck my other workstation's mobo fried out on me last night so now I'm down to my backup box and one external hdd thank god for backup boxes...
