I tried installing Xine. What I did was logged in as su and ran ./configure.It then said that I have all the.h files and then said that there's an error I'm sure I installed Mnadrake 10.1 correctly. Can someone tell me what the problem is....
When compiling from source, you need to run ./configure and make as a normal user. When you need to install then you run su -c "make install". You need to post the error that is prinited on you console when you try to run ./configure.
An alternative would be to configure urpmi sources using the instructions from easyurpmi. Make sure you also add PLF repositories. Run Mandrake Control Center, Software installation module and search for xine, libdvdcss and win32 codecs.
Just use the nice Mandrake-controllcenter for installation. Xine is on the distribution of 10. dont forget to also install all the nice plugins for the dvd decoding.

In general, it's impossible to compile in Mandrake. Don't believe me? Try it like what you're doing. It always fails somewhere. I have this inside belief that Mandrake is purposely doing this so that we depend so much on their packages and that we will be unable to stray away from this distro.
Aw c'mon, you can compile packages in Mandrake w/o problems for the most part.
You usually just need to supply the mandrake specific paths, most of these can be gleemed by looking at any src.rpm file.
However yes as you've put it, things do seem that way don't they...
60-70% of my tarball compiling problems are fixed with
./configure --prefix=/usr
Better still is to obtain a src.rpm file for at worst a previous version then urpmi it to get all of the developement lib requirements installed automatically.
Then usually the tarball compiles go well....
But on the other hand, tarball compiles are a waste of time unless you have a specific package which is not on the repositories.
The sad reality is that you then have to replicate the developer's machine to compile it yourself.... and usually they are using a different distro or developement installs.
I used to have problems compiling on Mandrake but realised that Mandrake splits most packages into, a binary, library and a devel package. If something is missing just install the devel package and try to recompile, usually it works fine.
If you want to compile under Mandrake, you have more or less to install all. I guess the policy of Mandrake is to keep it simple and slim (e.g. no Kernel source). Not to bad for only users.
