Installing Mozilla browser

Hey Guys,

Has anyone ever installed the Mozilla browers with Mandrake 9.2?

I have downloaded and extracted it to my home directory, but how do I actually install the software?

Can someone give me a step-by-step, how to?

There should be a README in the untarred directory. It will tell you how. You should just download a .rpm and then you just click on it and it goes to work.

Most are this:

./config
make
make install

It varies though. It has also been a while for me since I switched to Gentoo. I just type in emerge mozilla and go to bed.

Hope that helps.

Are you saying I can download a version of Mozilla that is a .rpm type and it will install automatically?

Thanks,

if you extracted the mozilla, you can run it from there. you can look around for an rpm. really you should extract mozilla where you want it. mozilla usually puts itself in /usr/lib, so you could
cd /usr/lib/
tar zxvf /whereever/mozilla-1.7a.tgz
cd /usr/lib/mozilla/
./run-mozilla.sh

do that from an xterm. you'll have to change a few things to match your situation.

Mandrake comes with a software installer for installs over the internet the console command for this is urpmi <pakage name> . You have to configuee this so go here http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php .
Follow instructions . You will be given a text to copy & run in console you must do this as root. After configuring all you need to do is log into console as root type urpmi mozilla1.6 and presto it should download & install mozilla along with any dependencies

Over my head

Hey New Kid,

I appreciate the advice, I went over to the site below and it says easy, but I dont find it to be that easy at all. I have Mandrake 9.2, but I am not sure what the architecture is? (!586?)

Then it asks me in column 2 to select a mirror for each source you want, and I have no idea what they mean by this.

Then step 3 asks for external add ons, I assume I check fttp://mandrakeusers.org box.
_______________________________________

New subject not part of above; (I installed Mozilla before trying the above)

When I originally downloaded mozilla, I saved it in my:
file:/home/sinvestments/Documents folder

If I open up the file and double click on the mozilla installer folder There are 7 separate files that show;

1) -xpi
2) - config.ini
3) - installer.ini
4) - mozilla-installer
5) - mozilla installer-bin
6) - MPL-1.1 txt
7) - README

If I double click on 4) - mozilla installer it goes through the motions as if it were going to install like a windows program. It has a readme section that pops up and click next; when I clcik next it shows the mozilla Public License screen and I click to accept. After I do this it shows 4 different types of installations.

1) - Typical
2) - Complete
3) - Navigator
4) - Custom

Typical is the one I go with and it has Destination Directory listed as /usr/local/mozilla however, when I click next, it tells me that this directory does not exist and it asks me if I would like to created it. I then select YES and I get an error -624, can't make destination directory, please try another directory.

I am lost and confused as to what to do....

if you're gonna install outside your home directory, you need to be root. That should fix it.

if you have teh time adn or bandwidth, I would download the tar.gz thing. You just have to untar it somewhere and you're ready to go. There will be a run-mozilla.sh or some such in the directory.

open a terminal window (konsole). Type
su
you'll be asked for the root password.

Once you're root, change into the mozilla installer directory:
cd path-to-mozilla-installer-directory

and then do
./mozilla-installer
(note the ./)

it will start up the installer program.

Would this be my installer path below?

"file:/home/sinvestments/Documents"

or do I go to where the actual folder or that installer is?

If it is. how do I enter it?

I hope I am making since.

I appreciate the help...

the path is where the actual installer program is. I guess it's something like
/home/sinvestments/Documents/mozilla-installer

(the file: is not part of the path. It's there so konqueror knows it's not on the www)
