Installing Mandrake 10.1 from NTFS Partition?

After finding Slackware too complicated as an introduction to linux I have decided to try Mandrake 10.1. I have downloaded the 3 .iso's but don't have any blank CDs left :P. Would it be possible to mount the images on my NTFS partition to a virtual drive and install Mandrake that way?

Also, which file system would you recommend for Mandrake 10.1. I used Ext 2 for Slackware 10.1.

Thanks .

I would assume it's possible. Get an ISO extraction program. I use ISO buster. Extract the ISO files to a main directory and point the Mandrake 10.1 installation to that. That's my best guess.

Or just go out and buy some CD-R's.

I found some CD-Rs in the back of my draw. I'm now in Mandrake 10.1 :P. It was much easier to install than Slackware 10.

Anyway, I have a couple of problems. I'm trying to install the driver for my 6600GT but I can't see how to login to root. When I load Mandrake it automatically logs me into my normal username. When I logout only my normal username is in the list :S. How the hell do I get into root?

Right, I managed to login as root by disabling the GUI login prompt. I then tried installing the driver which seemed to go ok untill I edited /etc/x11/XF86Config. Mandrake can no longer boot into the GUI . I was following these instructions: http://www.linuxforums.org/tutorials...rial-30960.htm

Is there a way I can edit /etc/x11/XF86Config again using the command prompt? If so, how?

Thanks.

I thought Mandrake 10.1 uses Xorg, but maybe I'm mistaken. Either way, as root type this:

Code:
XFree86config
or

Code:
xf86config
If I am right about Xorg, then do:

Code:
xorgconfig
If nothing happens, then you need to go into their directory. I believe it is in /usr/X11R6 or /etc/X11

It will be a text-based configuration.

As for logging into root in KDE, you can set up your login type so that you have to type in your username and password. In this case as root, your user name is root and your password is your root password. Hope this helps.

Please report back
