Installing Madrake 10.0 DVD
 

I recently download Mandrake 10.0 Official DVD. I burn't the image to a DVD-R using nero. The problem is when I try to boot from it it doesn't find the bootable cd. As soon as I hit enter when it asks me to "boot from cd" it boots me into Windows Xp which I have installed already. I've tried reburning the image with different media type and still the same results. When I try and launch it within windows it comes up fine and say we need to reboot and on the reboot I get the same results and I can't try the floppy method for I have no floppy drive. I have seen a few problems out there where cd1 doesn't want to boot so they use cd2, but in my case it's a dvd image. And after figuring out how to use MD5 a got my checksum now the problem is the place I received the iso from doesn't have the one to verify it agains't. IS there somewhere else I could get this number from? Sorry I'm a total newbie when it comes to linux.

It happen the same to me I have no other choice to copy everything on the HD (in a fat32 one)
Then burn the small boot situated in the /:boot imgs
and follows the instructions... and it is faster this way..

CAn you give me some more detail on how you did this?

pretty easy if you have some space on your computer:
Choose first to manage yourcomputerand pepare your hard disk
use partition magic or any other if already done go to next
on an free and already formated (fat 32 part)
create a new folder and name it (mdk or what ever you like)
remember the position of this partition (if 1st disk part1 it is underlinux hda1 if part2 = hda2 if second disk part1 = hdb1 and so on...)
just do not copy on the part you will use for linux (lol)
insert your dvd and copy everything inside this folder
go into this folder and burn the small boot.iso (8mo) on a rw cd .this is located in the boot folder.
then boot your machine with this cd inside (donot forget to go in bios and validate the boot ption on cd first)
that's it and you follow the instruction from there => install -from hd -where?-name of the folder
nb this boot can be used as well as a rescue at boot do not hit enter bur f1 or f2 and write down rescue.

So I tried burning the boot image but it was located in the images directory on the Mandrake dvd. I burnt't the image using nero and then tried a reboot. When It asked to boot from cd and hit enter and nothing happens it just boots into xp. The files that are on the cd are: alt0, alt1, test,(all folders) and boot.cat, isolinux.cfg, isolinux.bin, help.msg, advance.msg and boot.msg (all files). Does it matter how I burn it with nero?

you have to choose the option burn iso image in tools
(just under erase a rw cd)

I got the same thing. Sometimes it would boot, sometimes it wouldn't. First thing I had to do was make sure the BIOS looked for the DVD drive before the hard drive. After that it was a simple matter of ctrl-alt-del if the wrong thing came up. usually by the second reboot the DVD would boot. Only a minute or two lost.

I've tried rebooting 3 or 4 times but the "bott from cd" comes up and then when I hit enter nothing happens, it just bypasses to WinXp.

Does a CD boot if you use that instead of a DVD?

I have a little different situation. I downloaded the cd version (3 iso's) and copied all files from the iso's into 1 iso and burned it to dvd. When I restart my computer it does not boot from dvd.

I also created a bootable floppy with cdrom.img, when I boot from the floppy it tells me the mandrake cd is not in the drive.

The boot cd does not work either.

It sounds like you're checking the hard drive before the DVD drive in the boot sequence. You'll need to go into your BIOS to make sure the DVD drive is checked before the hard drive for bootable media.

sorry i can't help with the problem, but i'm dying to know where you found mandrake 10.0 official dvd for download? i've been looking all over for one. currently i've downloaded the three cd iso's and i'm looking for a way to turn them into a single bootable dvd, but i'd much rather have a dvd iso that is known to work in the first place.

I think that you should be able to turn the 3 CDs into a boot DVD using ISO Buster.
Extract all the files, maintaining the directory structure, into your temp folder.
Extract the boot sector into a file.

Create a new DVD-ROM (Boot) project in Nero - and select the boot sector you saved.
Add all the files.
Burn and enjoy!

The only problem may be the Advanced Settings. I know that for the Windows XP boot sector you need "No Emulation, Default Load Segment, 4 Load Sectors - I'm not sure if you need non-default settings for the Mandrake 10.0 boot sector. You may be able to figure this out using the size of the boot sector.
