LinuxQuestions.org - Installing Kernel Source with 10.1

I started a new thread on this issue named Reconstructing Lilo Bootloader to boot 3 OS's.

Since I solved this issue of the kernel-source with 10.1 which was giving me fits, I removed mandrake 10.0 off my hdb drive which did have a different kernel-2.6.3-15mdk and now I have installed 10.1 with kernel-2.6.8.-1-10mdk, but I removed the IDE cable from hdb and reinstalled Mandrake where 10.0 was.

I know it worked with Mandrake 10.0, mandrake 10.1 and Windows XP in a similar configuration. I was wondering if I could do the same with having 2 Mandrake's 10.1 on my PC.

I can't recall how I did it, I believe I went to bootloader in Mandrake CC and added it, but I can't recall how I did it. A friend of mine walked me through it and it took a while to solve it.

What is important is how each distro see's it's root and /etc directories.

These may have to be explicityly specified as kernel paramaters so as not to confuse Linux.

As is, when the kernel loads it looks for the first /etc/fstab it can find and uses this to start init.

In effect ONE kernel can boot up different versions of Linux if the basic root parition is specified for each instance.
