Installing DSL Modem on a Mandrake 9.2 system

Hey Guys,

I have a question to ask. I just put together a DSL network system onto my two PC's, can someone out there tell me what's the easiest way to set-up a DSL connection with my Mandrake Operating system?

My Windows Operating System auto detects the new ethernet card in which I installed inside of my PC, does mandrake 9.2 automatically detect and install the ethernet card? or does this have to be done manually?

Remember I installed the ethernet card after I installed Mandrake.

For years I have used the KPPP dial-up modem properties to log onto the net, what's the best way to set-up DSL on Mandrake to connect with the net, please ley me know.

Re: Installing DSL Modem on a Mandrake 9.2 system

Hey Guys,

I am responding to my own post (I know it sounds crazy) but I am doing it in hopes of helping any new comers out there that may be encountering the same situation I did. I did not expect to solve my own problem on my very own either.

SBC Yahoo does not support Linux configurations, so I had to figure it out on my own, with some assist. They told me I did not have to enter any DNS numbers or names in my situation.

Here's what I had going. I had 2 PC's connected up on a DSL network routing system. Both computers are running windows XP and windows 98. One of my PC's is a dual boot system (win98 & winXP), and the second PC is a triple boot PC with win98, winxp & Mandrake 9.2.

I am real familiar with using the KPPP dialing properties but I did not know how to configure my ethernet card and connect onto my network LAN system, with Mandrake 9.2.

I went down to my "K" start button area and scrolled up to "configure hardware", then I entered my password when it called for it. Then I clicked on the "hardware" task bar and it opened up another set of menus, in which I clicked on the "HardDrake lists and helps you set up your Hardware" tab.

Here it showed a list of all my hardware. It was here where I saw my ethernet card. "ADM983Linksys EtherFast 10/100" From this point I highlighted the ethernet card, then looked to the next column (on rt) and clicked on "run config tool" tab. Here the card was configured.

Then I went back to the "mandrake control center" and I clicked on "Network and Internet" tab? task bar on the left of screen.

I then clicked on "Configure Internet Access" task bar and it detected my ethernet card, I then hit the "launched the wizard" task bar and I followed the directions. Somewhere during the install phase it asked me to use my Mandrake DSK 1 cd-rom to install or configure the drivers. I could now see the LAN configuration icon in my internet connections settings.

I closed out and scrolled back to the "K' start button area - went to "Networking" - then to www. - then to "konqueror web Brower" and walla, I was on the net.

Hope no one was confused, but it made my night.....

dolphans, you had my hopes up when you reminded me of hardrake. My mouth was watering waiting tosee my NIC in the list of hardware. Alas it wasn't there. I've got a wireless card plugged in the USB. It's a Linksys, as is my router and DSL modem. The modem and router are connecting my Windows machine. I go to configure your computer -> Mandrake Control Center -> Network & Internet an d Launch the wizard. I check autodetect, then check LAN. Then I get a long list of drivers and it a sks which main driver to install. I've tried half of them, and they either fail or request more information I connot provide. In a terminal: #/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up
no such divice

help please. I'm trying to turn my wife onto Linux. We're tired of the viruses.

Boy you have wireless and mine was not. On my system it autodetected it. Some modems are not compatible with Linux. I would call Linksy tech support, they are really good there and eventhough some say they do not support Linux, some will.
