Installed Xorg 6.8.2 now keyboard don't works
 

Hi,
can anyone help meee? I installed the xorg 6.8.2 on my Mandrake 10.1 Community for amd64, now the keyboard don't work! i can't even enter to X because i can't type the password. I entered in the failsafe mode on the shell and the keyboard goes fine.

I'm having problens too with configuring my ATI Radeon 9600, but one problem at a time, and the problem above is more importante for now.

How did you perform the upgrade?

in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf change the drive from keyboard to kbd.

First i downloaded the xorg6.8.2, and read the README and BUILD files. Then i made the make world and make install procedures. Everything went fine, but when i rebooted the system the keyboard wasn't working.
I tried editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf, changing the driver for keyboard to kbd, but still didn't worked out.

What kind of keyboard do you have? USB or PS2?

Mandrake specific Xorg 6.8.2 RPM's are available on Thac's site.

Search for "Thac" on the Mandrake forum, and use these instead.

Bascially remove everything you did, and set up Thac's site as a URPMI source...

Then

urpmi xorg

and you're done.

I removed everything and i'm starting again.
I'm learning how to use the urpmi, so i did what you said.. ("urpmi xorg"), then i made urpmi xorg-x11, it showed this message "xorg-x11-6.8.2-6.mdk10.1.thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libpam.so.0) Continue (y or n)?" i choosed not to continue cuz i don't know what that means. (someone knows?)
Second thing, i use a amd 64, so installing this rpm i586 will work? I didn't found a x86_64 version.

You should also set up your OTHER URPMI sources as well.

That way urpmi will pick up missing files from the other repositories.

I have had the same problem occur twice now. Once before when I installed xorg 6.8.0 and KDE 3.3 on Mandrake 10.1 Community, kernel 2.6.8-1. I never got it properly fixed and ended up formatting / and /usr and reinstalling Mandrake.
Now I have the same problem again. I have been using of xorg 6.7.0 since and had upgraded KDE to 3.4 and my kernel is 2.6.11-1... no problems. I saw xorg 6.8.2 on thac's and I urpmi it and install goes well.
But now again I have the same problem as the original post, I can only use the keyboard in 'failsafe' mode.
When booting normally, X starts and takes a few more seconds to bring up the login/splash screen and draws a horizontal line across the upper part of the screen. I know the keyboard is dead as soon as I see that line.
Unfortunately, some of my USB devices such as key-drives don't work in failsafe mode. I also have to chmod 666 /dev/nvidia* as root before I can use glx... every time I boot. :mad:
I reinstalled xorg 6.7 from my Mandrake CDs, but the problem still persists.
Yes I too had tried 'kbd' instead of 'Keyboard', both the first time and now this time, to no avail.

I'm too much of a noob to know the details about failsafe mode, but basically I need to do a 'telinit 3', then I login and startx. The keyboard works then whether it is specified 'kbd' or 'Keyboard', but it does not work with a normal boot.

I don't want to have to format /usr again! Things were running sweet and I did lots of urpmi on /usr and I don't want to do it all over again :eek:

I found the solution!!!(for me at least ;D)
the display manager was set to "kdm".
i changed it to "xdm" and my keyboard works now!

Don't know if this is Mandrake 10.1 sensitive or MGA (matrox) sensitive for Xorg 6.8.2
After switching to "kbd" from "keyboard" module in /etc/X11/XF86Config to obtain any keystrokes, the
initial start of Xorg results in NO keystrokes passed to KDM, not alt-ctrl-del, nada.
Think of this as a fantastic security feature against the casual penetrator booting your box.
All that needs be done is to select 'Restart X Server' in the KDM menu and keys should return to functionality.
