Hopefully someone can put a little light on my problem here. I'm new to Linux, and new to Mandrake. I loaded 9.2 and goes great. Thought I would try 10 - same drive fresh install over top of 9.2
Set up urpmi update from a mandrake mirror. updated 10 - selecting bug fix & security (all) now I get nothing but corruption - desktop KDE is a mess I pick a icon nothing happens, there are no applications when I click the "K" on the toolbar, I get 2 icons on my desktop for my zip drive - both icon are accessing the same drive - long story - this didn't happen till I updated. Knowing that 10 isn't a stable copy I descided to do a fresh install of 9.2 over top of 10. Booted from the CD and blasted the drive and away I go - installed 9.2 pointed update to a mandrake mirror - update and...... corrupted 9.2!!!!! same type of problems as I had with 10 a corrupted desktop - no access to rpmdrake - no applications from "K"
So where does that leave me - well I used an XP setup disk to deleate all partitions from the drive and installed 9.2 with no updates. And so far behaves as it should (I guess) but I did like what I saw of 10.
Sorry for the long post - but as an experienced MS user I find this less than a positive experience. Know my lack of knowledge with Linux is a big point - I want to know if there is a rooted problem by what I have done.
- is the problem that I have selected all updates?
- do I need to select updates only in a certain sequence?
- only update if I find I have a problem?
i can't get my update to work yet in my new 10community install.
maybe a bug?
looks good otherwise though.
i can't be too hard on it yet, it's technically still a beta.
I installed mandrake10 over my 9.2 which went fine, only thing I use multiboot and Yes I use LBA and not auto for my disks in my BIOS setup.
As soon as I rebooted my PC and wanted to use Windows 2000, I get a black screen.
Now this is a nightmare for people that still use Windows because Linux is still way far back for alot of applications. If my windows partition is lost, due to this unacceptable release, I will go to another distribution for sure.
I don't endorse installing Mandrake 10 in its present state on any PC until they fix this problem where it corrupts the MBR. My rating of Mandrake 10 at the present time is a -100, too bad they looked so promising, a much better presentation then Redhat.
I still have my partitions set up for Windows2k, which is till there, I just can't start it,, I am hoping Mandrake has some sort of fix, itherwise they may loose many many many clients. I will probably go back to SUSE or REDHAT.
I also went to "10.0 Community" over my 9.2. I'm now back to 9.2.
I just couldn't take the slowness of my internet anymore, and it seemed to be getting worse as I went. I tried everything that was posted on the Forum to try
to help it out, but it just wasn't the same as my old 9.2 lightning fast
connection.
Like anything else that's new, I recommend waiting until the some bugs are worked out, or, if that's what you enjoy doing yourself, go for it. I knew better, but I did it anyway.
The features on 10.0 were great, but I couldn't take th trade off of it running like
molasses in winter on the web. Think I'll wait for 10.1..?!
