Ok when installing Mandrake Linux 10.0 it says loading in memory or something like that. Then it's like give or take 5 minutes until the language selection for the keyboard, something like that pops up, and it freezes. Well, actually I'm not sure whether it hangs, freezes or it's just my keyboard that isn't working. I have problems with some LiveCD's like Knoppix STD & PHLAK after it boots my keyboard doesn't work. Now what I did was alt+f3 for the logs but I don't know or understand what I’m looking at. I saw what look like 3 errors.
1)
needs keybdev
file-not-found-in-archive keybdrv.ko (maybe you can try another boot floppy such as 'hdcdrom_usb.img')
2)
ERROR openingfile Mandrake/base/patch-oem.pl:
3)
ERROR: Killing run away process (process=/usr/bin/insmod_, pid=27, args=/tmp/hid.ko, error=ALARM at /usr/bin/perl-install/run-program.pm Line 70
konnexx; yes u have two(2) errors stating
problem with cd oem ,(3)scroll to usr//bin/perl-install/run-program.pm line70
pause at that line or entire explantion of what may be missing during install.
advise; go to http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/Table of Contents #4 section 4.1.4 Installation and
section 4.2 System Administration and Configuration subsection 4.2.1 Configuration/Installation. while your at it
check your keyboard for compatibility and against another pc to check whether it is operational. those should guide to correct
problem!
Thanks, I’m looking it up as I speak, but I'm still a little lost. What I don't understand is what's i386 & i586? I know it deals with the CPU, but I don't understand entirely. Of course, the only one I could find for 10.0 is i586. My processor's an AMD Athlon 800mhz. Could that be the problem, my processor isn't compatible with i586? I've installed Mandrake Linux Power Pack Edition 8.1 on this computer before, which I purchased at a retail store. Now I’ve downloaded the 10.0 iso’s, and checked md5sum.
i386 and so on originally referred to Intel's 386 processors, next came the 486's followed by the Pentiums (which are sometimes referred to as i586's. i686 is now used to refer to the Pentium3 and greater Intel processors and compatible processors from other companies that deliver comparible performance. AMD Processors are compatible with programs compiled for Intel chips, but they might not run as fast as they can't take advantage of certain intel optimisations. Likewise programs compiled for AMD chips will run on an intel processor, but not as fast due to the different optimisation methods.
Do you have a USB Keyboard and mouse?? Check that these are compatible with linux on the Mandrake Website or even the Linux HCL on this site. A better (and more reliable) option is to use ps/2 keyboards and mice so you don't run into any problems with USB support as it is still relatively new to Linux.
