Question installation problem

Hello community,

When my WinXP crashed and the rescue disc was usless i decided to move over to linux.
Not knowing which distribution to install i got my hands on an old Red Hat 9 that showed to be too old for my computer.
I then bought a Mandriva Linux 10.2 (2005 LE i586) in hope to get my computer to work. But sadly I have difficultys to install this distribution too.

Problem
Insterting CD, shortly after the BIOS menu the install-CD starts showing the Mandriva installation menu with two choices: Instal1 press enter, advanced install press F1.
I hit enter-button. Installation begins but after 5 sec screen goes blank the comuter reboots and we are back at the BIOS menu.

What??? is the *#**¤-computer too old now for the distro or what????

Computer data:
Compaq Presario with Intel Celeron CPU 2.8 GHz, SR1000
Product SR1110SF

Please advice what to do

I had a problem like that with my son-in-law's HP Pavilion. I wanted to install Mandriva 2006 because that it what I use on most of my computers. My solution was to install SUSE 9.3 which installed without problems. Each distro has a lot of customized installation software and I suppose they can't test with every possible hardware combination.

Boot from CD1 and when it's booting hit ESC to get to the prompt. Then try starting up Linux without ACPI. At the prompt type: linux noacpi and see whether that will allow you a successful boot.

Cheers.
