Hi, I'm hoping whoever can help with the previous post can help me out too! I'm brand new to Linux & this is my first attempt to move away from Microsoft.
I'm having similar problems (as noted in the previous post ) with my desktop , so I have 2 questions:

Q1. Why did my computer freeze on trying to load Fedora?
Q2. Can I change how I reinstall Fedora to make it work properly (see below)?

I downloaded the Fedora core installation discs, did the media check, and the install went fine. I let RH handle the partitioning of my single 30GB hard drive; however, it would not allow me to keep the Win98 o/s untouched, but I instead had to choose to repartition the whole drive (I had already backed up everything). I let RH determine the partition settings.

When I rebooted to start Fedora, after several minutes of system checks it froze after the lines "Enable local file system quoting = OK" then "Enable Swap Space = OK". I rebooted several times, same problem. (I also tried to press "I" for interactive startup, at which point my monitor flickered, went blank, then returned to continue system checking)

I re-installed Fedora all over again, and the same problem occurred.

In order to get my PC back up I re-formatted my hard drive with Fdisk. So I created 3 partitions(C-E), hoping this would allow me to install Win98 and keep it there this time after installing Fedora again (I want to make sure I can use Fedora easily before I make the switch!). I installed Win98 to my E partition, leaving C & D open except for some files placed there on the Win98 install.

I would appreciate any help on how I can reinstall Fedora to make it actually work. (Keeping in mind my limited technical knowledge!) I didnt' get any response to my posting on another site.
Thanks!

_sometimes_ what this means is that the cd was incorrectly burned...

are you using homemade or box-set cds?

if homemade, did you check them?

also, even if the cd checks-out:

this (your freeze) happened to me on one of my client's pc with mandrake 9.1... i was using a homemade cd, but that had been checked (md5)... it always stalled about 1/3 of the way when it was loading into memory... but the cd worked and works fine on all other pcs i've tried, and because i had checked it (http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/coasterless.htm) i knew the cd was fine...

so anyways, the thing is _on_that_pc i used redhat 9 instead of mandrake 9.1 if i remember correctly... redhat would load without problems...

did you try with another distro? perhaps even a live cd (to test hardware compatibility)?

this sounds like something unrelated to the problem supreme_command is having...

it might be wise to start a new thread with it's own subject and stuff... you can post a link to it here so everybody here can continue helping you...

anyways, do the same errors occurr every time you install???

if you can post _all_ the error messages _exacty_as_they_appear it would help a lot...

meanwhile, you could also try partitioning the disk yourself with the partition tool in the installer, instead of letting it do it for you (in case it's doing something weird)...

the usual _basic_ partition setup is one for root (/), one for swap, and one for home (/home)...

for example, with a 20gb disc, you could do something like this:

- 2gb for root (/dev/hda1)

- 600mb for swap (/dev/hda5)

- the rest for home (/dev/hda6)
