Unhappy install speedtouch 330 with Mandrake Community

Dear All

I am trying to install a Speedtouch 330 USB modem in Mandrake 10 community. However, I am making a complete mess of it. I was getting a message about needing to load mgmt.0 and the need to down load a file to do this. I tried this but could not find mgmt.0 In desperation I then download a rpm version of 586 installed that and got the same message. I then did the wise thing and read the how to which said not to install anything but just copy mgmt.o. So I deleted the 586 rpm. In the maentime I had tried to install the speedtouch on my windows ME partition, without much success due to ISP not providing the necessary information. However, I tried to install the speedtouch on my Mandrake partition again and ticked the use Windows partitions when it asked for the mgmt.o file and this time it went onto the next step. It is here I have come to a halt. There is a list of different connection methods Host to Host, PPP via ATM etc. I have no idea what I should be ticking. Also have I made a mess of things by install and then simply deleting the 586 rpm? Also what should I expect to see once the modem is correctly installed and up and running: will there be a icon, do I need to look up something on the menu?
I really want to try and get broadband up and running on my linux partition but it is very frustrating, but then so has my providers lack of easily assessable information on installing with Windows ME
Basiclly I need some kind person to tell me how to go through the process step by step
Any help will be most welcome.

I've the same modem, and have been trying with 9.2. Your location is important and also what your ISP has said about the connection method. for me I've found I want PPPoA for Pipex.net in the UK.
Try the Mandrake Control Centre to remove the rpm, deleting just the .rpm file wont uninstall the extracted contents.

I dont have my line enabled yet, so have been trying to find a way to test my modem asap. I installed the driver off my Mdk cds, then copied the mgmt.o from the ISP cd.

Hi Proud

I to am with pipex.net. Thanks for the advice and I will try it out.
What do you mean by location? I think the mgmt.0 must have load becasue I had load the ISP cd on my windows drive.
It is interesting you come from ringwood my parents are from there!

Warmest regards

The country affects the VPI and VCI numbers, which seem to be stored in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl for me now. I have this line (amongst others) in it:

pty "/usr/sbin/pppoa3 -e 1 -c -vpi 0 -vci 38"

I know the 38 might need to be converted to hex which would make it then 26 (had a lot of fun messing with a Sagem F@st 800 E2T modem).

You sure that's mgmt.0 and not mgmt.o? Either way I think you should check the correct path's in your /etc/speedtouch.conf file, as well as the correct usb interface driver.

Small world! Btw you should fill in your profile's location and distro fields for faster answers.

Hi proud

I have tried to act upon your request to profile but I cannot work out how to do it.

I have also searched for mgmt.o on the speedtouch CD but cannot find it!!!

However, I have got speedtouch to work under Windows at least which is a start

For changing your Control Panel profile options, see here.

On the cd the microcode is named different, maybe as ZZZLP2.eni or KQD6P2.eni

I'm trying in Win98 tomorrow, as well as with my Mdk 10.0 Official install.

W00t! Some important news about my 10.0 Official attempts. After noticing that I kept finding the firmware as ZZZLP1.eni and ZZZLP2.eni, but finding that neither were firmware+boot code, I realised that the first is the boot code and the second is the main firmware, so you have to use the command modem_run -v 2 -a /usr/share/speedtouch/ZZLP1.eni -f /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o (after you've copied/symlinked ZZZLP2.eni to mgmt.o).
And then your /var/log/messages logs should go from:

And some readme/install notes said the BULK failed line is normal.
Now I'm gunna sleep before finishing the other half of this puzzle!

Ok, next I changed my /etc/ppp/peers/adsl file so it looked like this again:
Quote:
noauth
noipdefault

sync
noaccomp
kdebug 1
nopcomp
noccp
novj
holdoff 4
maxfail 25
persist
usepeerdns
defaultroute
pty "/usr/sbin/pppoa3 -e 1 -c -vpi 0 -vci 38"
plugin pppoatm.so
user "username@xtreme3.pipex.net"
There was a 0.0 line which I realised was meant to be 0.38, and worked a lot better being removed and appending those -vpi 0 -vci 38 arguements to the pppoa3 line. I think the plugin line is different compared to my screwy 9.2 configs.

After I got my microfilters connected correctly (stupid mix-up with the Sky box and the line to upstairs) I've got working ADSL in Win98 and Mdk 10.0!

I simply have to run that modem_run command, and then pppd call adsl and I'm rocking

Now to finish it by adding that to a script, and then getting 9.2 sorted.
