install hangs without even starting
I have an AMD Duron 700 on a standard budget motherboard; GeForce MX 2 video card; 384MB RAM; a CD drive, an 8GB HDD, and a 100GB HDD. I'm trying to install Mandrake 10.1 Community from CDs. The ISO files are MD5-verified, and the CDs burned with no errors. The problem I'm experiencing also happens with my Mandrake 10.0 CDs.

The problem itself is simple: When I boot from the first installation CD, a screen tells me to press Enter to install, or F1 for more options. Hitting Enter, or hitting F1 and then initiating a graphical install, causes the computer to hang on a blank screen.

Choosing a text install causes the computer to hang as well, on the following lines:

init init/main.c:711
init init/main.c:714
enabled ExtInt on CPU#0
ESR value before enabling vector: 00000002
There are no obvious error messages: that's the tail end of the output.

I appreciate any comments or suggestions (and if nothing works, I'm also open to rival distro suggestions).

have you experienced the same problem with other distros? try e.g. with a live-cd.

i do think the nvidia driver is your problem here. boot your cd with f1 and try with vga=normal.

Just gave it a shot.

linux vga=normal
gave the same result. I'll try Debian or a derivative next, I guess.
