Install from hard disk?

Hi,

I've just recently broken the chains of bondage that was Microsoft and am looking forward to using linux.

I began with Red Hat, but for some reason I decided to switch to Mandrake.

Is there a way to install Mandrake 9.2 from the hard drive in a similar fashion to Red Hat? My CD writer is trashing disc's like there is no tomorrow when I'm attempting to burn the ISO's that I got from the Mandrake website. I used an ISO extractor program to copy all of the contents from the 3 disc's to a Fat32 partition just to make sure the ISO's were not corrupt (and they are not). It would be really nice if I could just keep the 3 incremental ISO's in a folder and direct the installer to install from that location. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, once I'm up and running, can I use Black-box as my window manager/desktop environment in Mandrake?

Thanks in advance. By the way, this forum is great! It's convinced me that I can switch to linux and not feel like I just sat down in front of the computer again for the first time.

Yes, you can install MDK just like Redhat. Just create the boot floppy using the hd.img image file. See MDK's documentation for complete details.

rawwrite doesnt does any write checking on the disc as it writes the image,so better use a not-used brand-new good disk. i had to write 3 discs to finally make it without "boot failed" errors.

Thanks for the info, I've finally got Mandrake up and running. Great stuff. The Blackbox and Enlightenment DE's are really sleek and minimalistic. That and all of the development environments are my deciding factors to switch from MS or BS or whatever win32 is going by these days. I'm really into the philosophy behind GPL software and I look forward to making contributions to the free software community.

And along those lines.... Is there any way for me to reuse any of the Visual Basic applications that I've written on Linux? I'm slowly getting a handle on the C, C++, Java languages but I've been coding in VB for so long that I'd really like to continue doing so. I really don't need the "Visual Basic" development environment but a graphical application that allows coding in BASIC would be really helpful. Any ideas.... Anyone?

peace, love and good happiness stuff...
