Incomplete boot of Mandriva 2006 Free Ed. on HP a1330n

I'm trying to boot Mandriva 2006 Free Edition (from Linux User magazine DVD) onto my almost-new hp a1330n (AMD 64) computer with WinXP.

It starts to boot, gives blue screen complete with penquin, rectangle in the middle with progress bar below, and a second progress bar near the bottom of the screen. The "upper" bar fills quickly. Nothing appears in the rectangle.

The lower bar progresses about 1/4 of the way across, then stops. Nothing happens after that; it just sits there. Nothing has changed on the blue screen.

I'd really like to give Linux a try! Can anyone suggest how to get this version to boot on my computer?

if this has happened a few times, i would suspect a faulty DVD... sorry... but dont give up... give mandriva and linux a shot... its worth it!

Press <esc> (twice) before progress bar appears or just after it appears

also try option nosplash at the boot (press F1, F2 or F3) for more option

When the PC hangs there will be error messages or an idea of what the last
action was.

Newer hardware = possible hardware detection problem

try also also all these boot parameters at the same time
acpi=off noapic nolapic

There are more things to try, just let us know what happens
(you want to boot with a verbose text mode, not graphical for now)
