i have the ISOs; how do i install?

i downloaded the 3 ISO disks for mandrake 10.0 and started my computer w/ disk 1 and all i got was command line. i typed help and tried some of those commands but no luck. when typing `install' it said that the kernal must be loaded first. i don't know what i'm doing, i'm new to linux. i bought suse 91 per. and installed it w/ no prob. i downloaded mandrake from the official web site. any help will be nice. please be as specific as possible. thankyou

A few questions:
1) Are you sure you downloaded Mandrake 10.0 Official?
Stupid question I know, but there are several versions of Mandrake on the official site - some of them are beta versions and these might not have a graphical install like SuSE. If you downloaed the Community or Cooker versions then you've got a beta/development version.
2) Did you run the md5checksum on your downloaded .iso files?
If you didn't, your install CD's might be corrupted.
3) When you mean a command prompt, does it look like this - Boot: ?
If it does, type 'expert' and this'll start the expert install method with a graphical interface. Don't let the term 'expert' put you off, it just means you've got a couple of extra questions to answer about your hardware before you get to the actual install.

Your .iso files file name should give you a hint as to what you've got.
19 hours? You must be on dial up. Do you know anybody with an ADSL connection that might DL the .iso's for you?
If you live in the UK I can give you links to buy the Mandrake CD's from for dirt cheap money - or I might be able to copy mine and send them to you if you don't have a credit card/are too young to have one.

First download ALL 3 CD´s COMPLETE

After downloading, burn ISO with NERO up 6.o to 3 CD´s.

If You have trouble to download and You have DSL use a DOWNLOAD ACCELERATOR (for example DAP).

After getting complete 3 CD´s (something about 694 MB per CD) burn them as told.

Then Install them (in BIOS of your PC Boot seqvence A CDROM C or CDROM C)

Installer will start by itself....

Have FUN & repost if Yóu´re succesfully.

Can't help you with the SuSE configuration thing - I've never set eyes on SuSe so I wouldn't even know where to begin with configuring an ethernet card with that distro. Sorry.
Using some sort of download assistant might speed up your downloads a little - I can't recommend any for Windows though.
When you've downloaded, run the md5checksums. If they don't match you know the DL is corrupt and you can save yourself a CD-R.

And yes, you've downloaded the right thing - 10.0 Official Download is the one you want.

ok, so i use cd-rw's, will that be a problem? more info on the command line i was talking about; i removed suse 91 and so i'm starting over from scratch. when i booted my computer it came up with this.

GNU GRUB version 0.94 (638K lower/65527K upper memory)
[Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.
For the first word, TAB lists the possible command completions.
Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> _

regarding the download time, i downloaded it from a Texas mirror (and i'm in Utah) on sat. and sun. I'm downloading it from a California mirror now and the 1st disk only took 30 min. I'll let you know if md5 checksums are the same.

Yeah, you should probably use CD-R's that are finalised (ie nothing more can be written to them) for install CD's.
That command line is SuSE's Grub installer. When you booted SuSe ordinarily, you got a graphical menu, right? Well, that command line is what runs underneath the graphics.
When you install Mandrake that should get overwritten with lilo, which is the default Mandrake bootloader.

man i feel so dumb. ok, let me see if i got the process right. download the ISO, check the md5sums with a md5sum checker (i'm going to use digest IT), then burn the ISO to a cd-r using a program that has ISO image burning capabilities and that's it, right?

Pretty much, yeah.
When you burn the .iso's, make sure you burn the image and not the file. In both Nero & EasyCD in Windows, if you just double click on the .iso file, it'll open up whichever program you use and be already set to burn the .iso image.

i can't find an ISO burner that will work or let me burn more than 300mb at a time because its a trial version and i don't want to buy one that would defeat the whole purpose no wouldn't it. i tried Magic ISO, ISO recorder, my current version of RecordNow! does not burn ISO's but bootable's whatever that is. and i tried Nero express something or other that i already had but it was the same as RecordNow! so i think i'm just going to try and get my realtek card working on my computer and get online to either burn it with k3b or upgrade my suse 91 per. to 91 pro.
do you know of any free ISO burners or what the parameters are for NE2000 driver for the ethernet card?
