I am a pre-newbee when it comes to Linux - 22 years user of CP/M, DOS and all versions of Windows.
As we speak, I am downloading Mandrake 10.1 (3 CD's). I noticed here version 10.2 available. I have already downloaded disk 1 and 2.

Is it a mistake to install that version as opposed to version 10.2?

What did change since 10.1 and does it warrant to start the whole download from scratch?

Alternately, is it possible to update to the newer version without downloading the whole thing?

Thanks for you help.

If you haven't wasted any CDs yet, go for 10.2. Of course 2006 is supposed to be released next month...

have one pc with 10.1 the other with 10.2,
there are enough changes that I prefer 10.2.
Would also say go for 10.2

Also FYI have read a few times people being doubtfull about updating
from say 10.1 to 10.2 (or any minor version change) and advocating
installing from scratch the newer edition.
Have done upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2. It went ok, but still had a few problems.

So when you get 2006, you can choose: upgrading or fresh install: your choice

Have been using MDK 10.0 for 6 mos. now.

very stable and detected all of my hdwr. This distro installs itself beautifully in about 20 min. Later you can learn how to install custom packages (software)

10.1 had some glitches. For some reason they messed with the USB devices and now it won't pickup some flashdrives. 10.2 is Mandriva 2005. Supposed to be better than 10.1

If you're new to linux, try a live version. it will run off the CD and RAM so you can check it out without altering your hdwr or OS. Don't be fooled by the slight delay in some of the apps......that won't happen with real install.

good luck
