I get a black screen after boot

I dont get a desktop or anything. Ijust installed this and it boots up well it seems, then it goes into a black screen, the computer shows activity for a minute after it then nothing. Anyone know what this is?

At what point do you get the black screen?

Do you see the Lilo/Grub boot screen where you can select the kernel?

Have you tried both the SAFE and non-fb mode starts?

Often the latter permits you to see any error messages which may be symptomatic of the problem which is causing the boot to hang.

Well it gets through the fb safe boot wheni first start teh computer or whatever, then it goes through the next two bars, the farthest i get is the screen where it says " click esc for verbose mode" it gets past that. Then it switches to a black screen, the computer continues to work for a minute or so then stops basically.

check yout /etc/X11/XF86Config file

at "MonitorLayout" you can specify to which screens the output is send (avoid AUTO)

Have you tried:

1) Selecting a text mode startup instead of the GUI mode?
2) Pressing ESC and seeing exactly where it's hanging?
3) Trying "FAILSAFE Mode" startups to see if they work.
4) Inserting the nolapic argument to the kernel?
