I have Mandrivalinx 2007 With Kernel-2.6.17.5mdv
- Motherboard Type: MSI K9n6GM -V series with NVIDIA GeForce MCP61(V/S/P)
-Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ am2 Socket
-1GB memory 533
- SATA HD 160GB Western Digital ( C:Primary F: Primary D: & E: Logically )For Windows And ( / on sda7 and Swap on sda8 )
- LG DVD RAM writer (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N )
I have some problem with the linux
1- The system can not feel the sound card
2- The system can not the Ethernet cards on board
3- I can not see the DVD when I opening its folder
( there is no response when I but any media on it )
2- The system can not the Ethernet cards on board
4- I can not Login as ROOT
I'll help with the two problems that I know about.
2. Show us the output of 'lspcidrake'. That will show us two things (what hardware you have and what driver Mandriva thinks it should use). Also show us your /etc/modules.conf by running 'cat /etc/modules.conf' and we'll see if that module is configured properly.
4. root login is disabled if you select "Higher" or "Paranoid" security level. The only way to become root is to 'su -' from a regular user login. If you select the "Paranoid" security level, there is an extra security setting that 'su -' will only work if your user account is part of the "wheel" group. Your options are to either get used to using 'su -' to become root, or to lower your security level with 'draksec' to either "Standard" or "High". For reference, it is considered very dangerous to login as root because you can destroy your system with an accidental "drag and drop" of some important directory when in the file browser. It's recommended that you login as a regular user and 'su -' when you need to do tasks that require root access. You just happened to choose a security level that *enforces* that recommendation.
I tried to login as root and my try is successful but I don't know why
I added an Intel EtherExpress card to try to access the net through linux but no way the system can not access the DVD & CD drivers to install some package
[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/modules.conf
cat: /etc/modules.conf: No such file or directory
[root@localhost ~]#
this what I finde in the file modules under /etc and there is no modules.conf file
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.
and I still had no access to my DVD & CD Drivers I hav the error
Unable to find network interface for selected device (using forcedeth driver)

1) For the sound, make yourself a member of the "sound" group. Then install and run "alsaconf". ( It may already be installed. ) Back when I used Mandrake linux, I needed to reduce the timeout for the sound to 2 seconds in the kde sound configuration.
These are the network devices. Look at the output of "lsmod" and see if either the eepro100 or forcedeth are present. I looks to me that the module was begin loaded and you may have needed to configure networking instead of trying a different nic device. However, if you don't have a NAT router, you could use your computer instead to provide NAT and a firewall for your lan and use the second NIC device for your LAN, perhaps in the future if you don't have another computer.
3) It's been years since I used Mandrake Linux, so I don't even know if Mandriva uses udev and hal. Often, HAL will recognize the DVD and a udev rule will create a device for it on the fly. If you insert a DVD disc, do you see a popup? Do you have files in /etc/udev? Some distro's use hotplug, and some use hal helper programs and "run" commands in the udev rules instead. You might want to look if you have any packages for HAL or udev that need to be installed. Also, hal communicates with KDE or Gnome using dbus. Do you have a missing dbus package?
eepro100 : Intel Corp.|EtherExpress PRO/100+ [NETWORK_ETHERNET]
root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/modules.conf
cat: /etc/modules.conf: No such file or directory
[root@localhost ~]#
My apologies, I meant to say cat /etc/modprobe.conf. (modules.conf was for the 2.4.* kernels. modprobe.conf is for the 2.6.* kernels).
As one poster said, your card requires you to load the eepro100 module. If you go into Mandrake Control Center (mcc), you can configure your network card and it will take care of configuring your modprobe.conf for you.
dear jshiwal
by the way this my first login to the internet throw mandriva 2007 by intel ethernet card
I want to use my onboard ethrnet NVIDIA !!!!
I tried and I put my self to sound group
but I can't install "alsaconf" I didn't know how to " ISTALL " in linux ( sorry) I'm coming from Windows enviroment!!!! but I know the DOS
[tamer@localhost Desktop]$ alsaconf
bash: alsaconf: command not found
[tamer@localhost Desktop]$
forcedeth : nVidia Corporation|MCP61 Ethernet [BRIDGE_OTHER]
The first part of this line indicates that the forcedeth module was loaded at the time. Before the colon, is the name of the kernel module sending the message. You could try "modprobe forcedeth"
The "alsaconf" package may not be installed. Try running MCC or "rpmdrake" as root to install it. You could also download the package from the http://rpm.pbone.net website. Use advanced search; click on "clear all"; then select Mandriva 2007.
You could install it then using the command "rpm -Uhv alsaconf-...". I don't know the full name of the package, but you can press the tab key for autocompletion to type in the rest for you. I think that the program to add yourself to a group is called "userdrake". You can get there through the MCC as well. Come to think of it, I don't remember if the group is called audio or sound. I think it is called "audio". That is something I had to do the last time I installed Mandrake Linux. It gave me permission to write to the /dev/dsp device.
If you want to get the onboard nic running and don't want to use 2 NIC devices, maybe if you removed the card you bought, things would work out better. Then the onboard device would be eth0 as you would expect.
when I tried to config the ethernet carde this error I gotit
Unable to find network interface for selected device (using forcedeth driver).
Ok, I'm going to be a bit verbose here. There are two things that I want you to do. The first is a manual test of the networking setup. The second is configuring the new networking card so that it is permanent IF THE FIRST STEP WORKS.
STEP 1
Code:
su - # to become root
/etc/init.d/network stop # completely shuts down networking
modprobe -r eepro100 # removes driver for Intel networking card
ifconfig -a # should see no eth devices
modprobe forcedeth # Good if says nothing
dmesg # Long listing, at end will say if the
# forcedeth module created an "eth0" device,
ifconfig -a # Should see an eth0 module with no IP
modprobe -r forcedeth # Returns networking to clean state
If that part works, then you only need to configure modprobe.conf so that the correct module gets loaded at boottime, and Step 2 will do that.
STEP 2
You can manually configure your networking or use mcc to configure it. Since I know manual methods best, I'll detail that, but feel free to try doing it in mcc. (You have to tell eth0 to use forcedeth instead of eepro100. Doing it in mcc has always frustrated me and I find it easier doing it manually). Become root, then edit the '/etc/modprobe.conf' file and change 'alias eth0 eepro100' to 'alias eth0 forcedeth'. You can also add 'alias eth1 eepro100'. After you edit this file and save it, you need to have the system read in and process those changes by running 'depmod -a'. Change your network cable to connect to your onboard NIC. Now when you do '/etc/init.d/network restart' it should come up with the correct information. Do a complete reboot to verify that it comes up with the correct IP. If it tries to also get an IP for eth1 (the eepro100 card), then you can go into mcc and configure it not to start at boot.
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe forcedeth
[root@localhost ~]# dmesg
eth0: no IPv6 routers present

You are unfortunately going to have problems trying to get this to work in your machine. If you have the skill level, you can try passing various combinations to the linux kernel: noapic, nolapic, noacpi.
You do this at the lilo prompt by passing one or more of those options to the kernel you choose. An example: 'linux noacpi' would probably boot the latest installed linux kernel, but without acpi being enabled. I do not know if any of those options I mentioned above would have any affect on your system. I don't have the hardware to test so I'm unfortunately not going to be any more use to you. :-(
Thank you very much for your time trying to help me
I wish to inform you that I will delete this mandriva2007 from my HD and I will try either Fedora core 6 or Gentoo2006-1 because since I install that mandriva after 3 days of trying to install it there are several hardware not working ( ethernet card, sound card, pc camera, DVD writer and CD-Rom )
so thank you again
