I've lost programs from the menu

Mandrake 9.2

I installed some programs from the disks, and then found that a large number of programs
had disappeared from the start menu (including the control center and configuration
programs).

The icons on the desktop and tool bar don't link now.

Any thoughts ?

are you using KDE? i used to use Mandrake and i think that's the default.
if so there should be a menu configuration program somewhere in the start menu.
sorry, i am in fluxbox right now and can't verify.

I'm using KDE, but the programs remaining in my menu are quite basic.
The Open Office modules, Hardrake, Kwrite, Configure mail and a couple of others.

I have no access to the control center or software config from the menu.

I have a browser and Konqueror open now, (from before) but if I close them I won't be able to reopen them.

I suppose I could re-install but I'd rather figure it out in case it happens to me again.

On the upside, it's a beautiful day today.

you should definitely not have to reinstall. unless i am mistaken this is a small configuration issue.

can you open a terminal/console/command-line? if you can get the name of the menu-configuration program you should be able to run it from there.

Hello,

Open a console
switch to root
cd to

Code:

cd /usr/share/applications/kde/
Code:

kmenuedit
this may help you

If not I have had this problem a number of times and have always found the (simple) solution on this site or google, can´t remember it off the top of my head as it hasn´t happened since I ditched the laptop.

Thats the right way to resolve the problem. This is a well known bug in some of the Mandrake 9.x releases. If you upgrade your system using urpmi, you should get updates that resolve the problem permanently.
