I'm just trying to install Gaim... "no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

I'm new to linux, but I've been able to successfully install gaim on slackware a couple days ago, so I know it's something Mandrake.

I downloaded the "gaim-1.0.0.tar.gz", extracted it, went into file:/home/jim/Documents/gaim-1.0.0 and entered ./configure

Code:
[root@localhost gaim-1.0.0]# ./configure
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for sed... /bin/sed
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.
How come I'm not able to configure source code in Mandrake? =\ It worked fine in Slack. But, it's a source code, so it should work all the same. Any help appreciated.

thank you,
-Jim

You need to install a C compiler like gcc on your system. Go to add / remove programs (or a similar thing in Mandrake). Look under Development tools. You will find a C compiler listed there. Check the box against it and click Update. You will be promptetd to insert one of your Mandrake install cds.Insert it and click ok. This will install the compiler on your system and then you can run ./configure to install gaim.

It's hard to compile stuff on Mandrake. I would recommend finding rpm's for the apps. Easiest is if you setup your urpmi: http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/. You can setup Cooker servers for the latests stuff but it broke my Mandrake box a few times so... You can also find rpm's (that aren't on the urpmi ftp's) here: http://rpm.pbone.net/. Installing a rpm is as easy as "urpmi *.rpm".

edit. From the gaim website the Mandrake 10.0 rpm: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/g...6.rpm?download
There are also rpm's for Mandrake 9.*.
