How to upgrade to Mandrake 10.1 official?

Ok so I'm dling the new iso for Mandrake 10.1 official, how do i upgrade my system?

I only created a / partition, does upgrading need to format that partiion, or does it just overwrite the current files?

Also what does it do if what i have is newer than what the distro has.

Say if gimp is 1.xx, and i have 2.xx installed, will it just not upgrade gimp? same with k3b, i already have the latest and greatest version

Will i have to reinstall all my programs again or anything?

Look here and maybe here.

I believe upgrading overwrites the current files, did for 9.1->10 for me I believe (a loong time ago, I've 50/50 on that statement).

If you have something newer than what the distro has it shouldn't be a problem. It may install the older version, but you can use package manager to remove it.

The posts dont look promising, I was hoping I wouldnt have to reinstall EVERYTHING to upgrade. Hopefully i get a new hd for the holidays, and can install 10.1 to a new drive and install programs as i need them, and then just swap between 10 on one drive and 10.1 on a new drive. I have moble racks so its only a matter of powering off, and swapping out the racks

That's not how it works unfortunately... Gotta go through the "update" option

I just upgraded to 10.1 Official and all my applications came through intact, it was a no brainer. I will in the future do a clean install though as I do believe its the best way to go.
