How to Unmute sound using OSS??

Hi

I cannot play back any sound although XMMS plays the mp3. The list of sound modules loaded are:

Module Size Used by
snd-page-alloc 5424 0 (autoclean) (unused)
snd-pcm-oss 18624 0 (autoclean) (unused)
snd-pcm-plugin 15792 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-pcm 31616 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin]
snd-timer 8528 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm]
snd-mixer-oss 4800 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-mixer 24544 0 (autoclean) [snd-mixer-oss]
snd 35248 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-pcm snd-timer snd-mixer-oss snd-mixer]
soundcore 4208 0 (autoclean) [snd]

When I try and bring up Sound Mixer I get the following message:

Invalid Mixer Analog Devices (70)
BTW i am using Mandrake 8.1 Kernel Version 2.4

Thanks for your replies.

Perhaps you should click on ALSA for your sound output, as all those module you have loaded are alsa, not oss modules..

or type in a console alsamixer, and see if a mixer pops up?

BTW, why are you using a dinosaur Distribution version?

Mandrake has many newer versions

Cheers,

Gary

Hi Gary

Thanks for your suggestions - well I could not play any sound using my on board sound card - so I plugged my SoundBlaster in and eventually got that working which is very nice.

Yea I know Mandrake has come along way, but I have just installed Linux on my machine and want to run with it for about 2 months before buying the latest edition.

Bye for now

Shelton.

You could always download the Community Edition and take it for a spin first if you wish.
